Based on bald1's thread about the whereabouts of Will, it made me wonder if any of you have asked anyone to notify our friends here of life's ultimate consequence?

I know it's morbid, but as seen, we do make friends here and it helps to add closure to those friendships.

I have my username and password tattooed on my forearm. You know I shed my earthy shackles when I start a thread titled "Tell me your conspiracy theories".

I will reply to each post with "yes" or "no".

Many members here keep in regular contact via means other than just this forum because of other similar interests or interesting events/travel plans. But I realize not everyone does that. You’ll know I’m dead when the MotoGP thread consistently falls to page 2 during race season. Big Grin

No. I'm reminded of the saying, "this isn't an airport; no need to announce your departure."

I understand each one want to think how we're influential / central to other people's lives but I consider myself a bit player at most if not a fill-in background player.

If I'm ever actually an influence in someone's life, they'll know it soon enough.

But for the people here, we've been going together because we've been going the same way. And when it's time to part ways, we can just know we've parted on good terms unless otherwise. And, if you happen to notice my passing, well,... bye and so long, my friend.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

This, I imagine many of us have correspondence off-forum with other members.
Similarly, if the F1 thread dies off, I'm likely on the wrong side of the dirt.

I started this thread based on what has possibly happened with just1tym, Will. Obviously people are concerned and arranging some kind of notification might ease some people's minds. There would be no guessing or assumptions.

Agreed, I’m bringing this up with the bride. Kind words and a few prayers are all I need.
Thanks!

It's not the same thing as a voluntary departure.

Many members here feel a very close kinship with many other members here. Not all of them so close they keep in any kind of regular contact outside the forum, but close-ish of a sort.

When a member some number of other members are fond of "seeing" all-of-a-sudden goes MIA, some are naturally going to wonder "Whatever happened to...? They were here one day and now they're not."

We regularly share life's ups and downs with one another. This I see as no different.

As regards the OP: No, I have not.

I have an envelope in the safe marked "Stuff to do when I croak" Seriously. It has my user name and password where required.

This is one of three forums that will get a note saying I've assumed room temperature.

It's not that I feel like I'm important, it's just to avoid the "Whatever happened to old whathisname?" posts. On the off chance that anyone even notices, that is.

One of the other forums that will get notified is because I'm the moderator and my backup needs to know it's his problem now.

Ordinarily, I would agree 'no need to announce your departure'.
But when Jim Allen passed, many of us needed to know what actually happened. He was a fixture here. I am very glad someone in his family made contact.

I have similar docs, but digital on a cd, tucked in with our paper will docs. Encrypted copy off site. Lots of other stuff in there that isn't covered in the comprehensive will I/we have. It's just nickel dime stuff, and who get's notified, who gets my fishing gear etc. SigForum isn't currently on the list, but my wife knows that and how to access my account, but I guess I should spell it out for her just in case we both go in some sort of car crash. I'd like people know I've moved on but don't want to make a big deal out of. Everyone will face that at some time.
