Just did an online build for a Polaris Ranger 570 (plenty of power for my needs). Enclosed cab, heater, winch, plow package, and a few other things. Online price came to just north of $20k. Figured I can get a couple grand for my older Grizzly 550 on trade in, so that'll bring the bill down a bit. It's a lot of scratch, but less than I thought it'd be. I'm just getting too soft to get out in the winter and plow on an open 4-wheeler. Anybody have a good reason to not get a Ranger? ________________________________________________________ It is long past time for a Convention of States. I like that Boss. Little better quality than the Polaris one I'd bet. I’m in South Texas so I will never need to plow snow, but I love my 2019 Ranger 900. It is a great side by side and worlds better than an ATV. I searched for about 3 months before finding mine used, it had less than 40 hours on it and I only paid $8500. | |||

Since tiny town made the street legal versions ok to drive in town, with a registration fee, There are plenty of them around now. From an outsiders perspective , they kinda seem Money puts. Not unlike bass boats and utility tractors. You almost never see one o.e.m. stock, Gee gaws, doo dads, bells, whistles, lights electronics. The big plus is parents don't have to use car seats Boosters or even seat belts to get the kids Too and from school. Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency. Neck Ties, Hats and ammo brass, Never ,ever touch'em w/o asking first | |||

I had a Polaris XP 900 that I sold a couple of years ago and my wife is still mad about it. Never had a single problem with it. It’s shocking how expensive they have all become. | |||

Base price is "only" $10 which is what I paid for my Grizzly 15 years ago. So prices haven't gone up a ton. Gustofer check into how the AWD system functions because unfortunately I did not until after I bought mine. On my Ranger 500 mid-size (probably a 2014) it was pretty bad in snow which is why I got rid of it. Essentially it did not have a true 4wd. In order to select AWD/FWD (whatever Polaris calls it) you must first lock the rear differential, which is often not a good thing. After that 4WD can be selected, but the front wheels did not pull unless the rear wheels turned 20% faster than the front, then the fronts engaged. The benefit of this system is one can drive on a good surface in "FWD" without stressing the driveshafts because only the rear is transmitting power. But that's why you want to be able to independently choose 2wd/4wd and when in 4WD both front and rear wheels turn the same speed, and separately the differential open or lock. My first experience driving it in 4WD on a dirt road covered in 5-6" of snow was I could hardly keep it on the road with the locked rear axle spinning the rear tires faster than the fronts it naturally fishtailed . It also skidded up my trails anytime more than 2wd open diff was required. After one season I sold it and moved on. Hopefully Polaris ditched that Hilliard AWD system. No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride. | |||

A buddy of mine just bought a ~2000 Jeep Wrangler, inline 6 and a 5 speed. About 90k miles, IIRC. Of course it depends on your use-case, but I'd give a hard look at a used jeep. | |||

Along those lines, used Kei Trucks (aka Japanese mini truck) can be purchased for half the cost of a side by side, and new is same cost. In many states (e.g. Texas and Montana), if they're 25 years old or older you can register it and drive on streets (federal law on the 25 years, and state discretion whether or not to allow registration), but if you buy new they'll never be permitted on-road. For used, the Subaru (e.g. '95 to '99 Subaru Sambar KV4 high-roof) and Honda (e.g. '99 and '00 Honda Acty HA6) in that order are set-up height wise better for Americans. Also, those two are either mid-engine or rear-engine so less heat and noise in passenger cab than other Kei trucks. Comparing a Kei Truck to a side by side is like comparing a Mazda Miata to a Polaris Slingshot. Designed ground up by automotive engineers to be an airconditioned and heated vehicle (i.e. it's not an add-on), better NVH (i.e. noise, vibration, and harshness), more load capacity in the bed, etc. Here is a good article comparing Kei Trucks to side by sides. I have a Ranger 900XP EPS. Electronic power steering. Make sure whatever you buy has power steering. Full hard cab, heat, stereo, winch, led bar light that turns night into day. I plow with mine all winter. My own driveway plus a couple elderly neighbors. Summer time it pulls duty at the lake property. Hauling garden dirt, pulling dead fall out of the woods,pulling the drag rake to drag the driveway. Pulling docks out in the fall. Giving grandkids rides etc. To be honest I kind of neglect it. It's overdue for an oil change and I need to get to that. One of those I need to get around to it things I guess.
