And just how would the rest of Canada stop them? Besides, doesn't Canada believe in political self-determination? Nice is overrated "It's every freedom-loving individual's duty to lie to the government." Airsoftguy, June 29, 2018

Quebec has been at it for decades. There’s such a thing called law and order that the majority of people still follow. A constitutional amendment that must pass. Their Clarity Act deals specifically with provincial secession. You think people are just going to unilaterally secede to start their own country or join the US and risk war breaking out? Q

The Canadian Supreme Court ruled in their 1998 Reference Re Secession of Quebec case that unilateral secession was illegal, after two attempted referendums for secession by Quebec (both failed without a majority anyway). The Canadian parliament subsequently passed the Clarity Act in 1999, making it so a provincial secession would require successfully passing an amendment to the constitution of Canada. And by that recent poll mentioned in the article in the OP, only ~30% of Albertans support secession. That's not even enough to prevail with a majority in that province alone, not to mention a majority in 2/3rds of the provinces across the entire country like would be required for a constitutional amendment.
