So you trust Apple then. Well good for you. I don't; they've given me zero reason to. They are as bad as all the rest, and their self-righteousness on privacy despite having no moral authority whatsoever just might make them worse.

JimmyRayBobThere are a million ways Facebook/Google/Apple/Microsoft/etc. track all of us. Not just google searches.
An example above - ads for oil after visiting an auto parts store. That was one of the mapping programs tracking you, no search needed. They may have made a bit of a leap assuming you needed oil, but that's just a numbers / percentages game.
And getting ads for Taco Bell could be because you searched for ANY restaurant. Or were near a mall, with restaurants. Or maybe they tracked your voice. Google/Facebook etc. know a TON about us.
And you don't need to search for a topic to start the tracking. You can directly enter a website name into a browser (for example,
www.casper.com for the mattress company). Casper (as an example, I don't know this about them specifically), might have a small, unseen tracker on their website that captures your data/info, and shares it with Facebook. I forget what those trackers are called. Then another mattress company calls up Facebook and says ... Hey, I'd like to send some ads to anyone that has been to Casper's website. Bingo, you're getting ads for a mattress company you've never even heard of. And maybe some Casper ads. And maybe some ads for bedding, pillows, sleep aids for insomnia, noise machines, melatonin and probably sheep to count.
Privacy is GONE. The smartphone is the single most useful spying device known to mankind. (it's also incredibly useful - that's the tradeoff).

Several days later, I'm taking a trip down to Atlanta to see mom. Decide to go a back way instead of I75. My google maps route all worked out, I take off. The map on my dash highlights EVERY single Taco Bell store between Knoxville and Loganville. Without me asking it to....
Smart TV?? Cable box?? The phone may or may not be listening. I wouldn't bet they are listening, but I wouldn't bet they aren't, either.
Ever wonder why TV manufacturers are making nothing but smart TV's? Because it's more info they can sell! And that info is worth more than the cost to put the "smart" in TV.
(I get Taco Bell pop-ups too).

GreymannI know nothing about cyber security.
That being said at the two national labs in New Mexico; Los Alamos and Sandia alot of employees are issued apple phones. DOD and DOE have some apps removed from the apple phones before issuing. And now since last summer you can't bring your Apple phone into certain areas or buildings because of security issues with apple phones, FaceTime being one of issues.
I have an Android and mostly use without an account. I log off Google and use without it , but I think they all spy in some way.

TXJIMSo what? At least for now we live in a free country. If they start rounding people up for living a boring middle class life I will be sure to switch to a burner phone

Cable boxes track all viewing. Xfinity remotes have microphones, no doubt others do as well.
Yes, cord cutters, the streaming apps are tracking. Suggestions come from somewhere.
NAPA could have just spotted your phone. BLuetooth low energy antennas, or just WiFi transponder monitors. Oil was just a guess based on past purchase.
Taco Bell and others buy advertisement on the map products so that their locations are highlighted. That could well be coincidence. Or now all restaurants are Taco Bell.
Facebook apps ‘look’ around your phone (Bluetooth and other emissions) for phones belonging to Facebook members... hence odd friend recommendations of people you just met.
All in the name of $$. So, maybe GPDR in Europe or California Data Privacy Law have something to offer you. I think something will start making rounds in the US soon, and CDPL will set the pace.

It’s all about “targeted ads”.
Horseshit. Apple is just as egregious as Android with this crap.
Horseshit. You need to educate yourself.
On the ignore list you go...
WTF? You edited his post to delete his iPhone example and ignore other's posts about iPhone spying. Jump to erroneous conclusions much?
The difference between iPhone and Android is that Apple locks it down so only they can spy but Google lets itself as well as all manufacturer's apps spy.
I only deleted that portion of his spiel to shorten the length of the post. Talk about “erroneous conclusions”. And you’re +1 for the ignore list.

PatenI can't say I've ever noticed my phone spying on me. I've gone into my google account control panel from my PC and turned absolutely everything off. I only ever turn my location tracking on when I use Waze or some other GPS related app, then turn it off again when I'm done. I don't use Chrome to browse but Firefox instead, and somehow ublock origin is installed with it. So I don't notice any ads while browsing. As a matter of fact, the only ads I can remember seeing is when I play free games I've downloaded and they show ads that are usually for other games or Russian phone ads.

goose5I noticed one very troubling perhaps coincidence. Last week I started a discussion here asking about good math books for older guys. The very next day ads for math books started showing up in my social media feed.

If such a thing happened repeatedly you might have a reasonable argument. Has it? Or was there just the one occurrence? If the latter: Could it possibly have been a coincidence?
I asked my wife, just to be certain. She cannot recall ever having experienced such a thing, either. That's two of us, with six Apple devices between us, plus BT connections to our Apple devices while we're in our vehicles, over a period of 2-1/2 years. We use all this stuff
a lot.
One would think that if Apple were listening to people in order to facilitate spamming them, it would've happened to us, no?
