David LeeGM Tech Question
The evap canister and purge valve. Unlike some Buick models, my old Park Ave canister is not located under the air box. I've been told its in the wheel well near the gas tank. Do I need to drop the tank to get to the valve? Man I hope not..
I can think of more funner things to do.

shovelheadIIRC the Purge Valve 1997278 is under the hood, adjacent to the intake manifold. The Canister is just that, canister only at the fuel tank.

David LeeOK thank you. I found the solinoid for the valve last week near the intake. If the valve is there too, it would be a big relief. Mine has a rectangle canister. Other model Buicks show a round canister under the air box. They also show the purge valve mounted on the canister.

shovelheadIIRC the valve is in the canister and not serviced separately.

egregoreOn that car, IIRC, the canister is under the car by, but not on top of, the gas tank, and the purge solenoid is on the engine. The valve on or near the canister would be the
vent valve. When you take the purge solenoid off, put it end down on a piece of white paper on a solid surface like a table top, and tap on it. If any little black particles come out of it, the canister has disintegrated inside and must be replaced, along with blowing out the line. This will clog up the solenoid so it either can't move and pass vacuum, or stick it open. Didn't you post recently about a vacuum leak? You should not be able to blow through the solenoid in either direction when it is off the engine.

David LeeSee I am following all this closely. If I am correct, the solinoid is right in front of me on the engine. The purge valve is mounted at or near the evap canister. I am so darned relieved to know I dont have to drop the tank.
Yes, I believe the pcm does a test for leak and the valve may be stuck open. P0440 code was scanned. If I can get a couple warmer days, I need to install the new radiator, hoses and thermostat. Then I can get under the back and see whats there. Man you guys are awsome!

Are you stating that the solenoid or the valve may show black particulates? I take it you mean the vent valve.

egregoreThis is a fairly typical purge solenoid of the period.
If you have an engine light on, the codes most commonly associated with this are P0442 and, if it sticks open, P0455.

David LeeOK, they seem to call it Vapor Canister Purge Solenoid Valve. Delphi # 1997251. Its at the intake. Is there not a seperate purge valve? Oh, and the cars manufacture date is 10/97. Its a 1998 and the store which did the scan used 1999 year. They could not find codes for 98.
