As good as that video is, it still doesn't show the level of intensity or how loud it would get when Wayne sang. You could stand there and shout into the ear of the guy standing next to you and he couldn't hear you. Brings back memories of what Chicago was like before the Communists took it over.
Yep. Messmer’s microphone was positioned two feet away from the organ console, and organist Frank Pellico said that on most nights he couldn’t hear Wayne sing. This message has been edited. Last edited by: snoris,

I like the Hendrix version.
I also like almost any version played by a military band.
I don't much like that Whitney Houston version. She takes liberties with the melody. And while this is more a matter of taste, I do not like that kind of melismatic (sliding all around and to the note that is the melodic note) singing. People think it is virtuoistic, but I find it to often be overdone and too showy. A lot of the time, it is just the singer showing off. By Houston's standards she keeps a lid on it, but I just don't care for that kind of singing.
I do like the Meat Loaf version, but Meat Loaf was a better singer than he often got credit for being.
The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

Amen to Messmer. As a kid hockey player in Chicago at the time, there are simply no words to describe the magic there.
That said, I think Cornelison is the single finest anthem I've ever experienced. Moving, powerful, and awe inspiring. Didn't hurt the Hawks were back and killing it and winning the cup too at the time.

Messmer sang the Anthem straight up, using the principle, "It's about the song, not me."
While Cornelison does have a great voice, he's gone "Look at me" with the Anthem, and I wish the referees would give him two minutes for embellishment.

I see your point. I still like it. I think he's a fitting replacement, and I can't wait for the playoffs every year and he adds to the enjoyment for me.
Putting the game on, opening up a fresh sausage giard, with some beers. Heaven
When the singing, applauding, cheering from the crowd in attendance is non-stop from the beginning of the anthem to the end...doesn't get any better than that.

This one. For sure. US Army Field Band and Chorus, and it’s performed at the site where it was written.

Some history, "that our flag was still there". From history.com,during the war of 1812:
"On September 13, U.S. soldiers at Baltimore’s Fort McHenry withstood some 25 hours of British bombardment. Early the next morning, they hoisted a gigantic U.S. flag over the fort, marking a crucial victory and a turning point in what would be considered a second war of American independence."

Ray Charles was a genuine gem. Another of his and my favorite is Georgia on my Mind.

If you're goin' through hell, keep on going. Don't slow down. If you're scared don't show it. You might get out before the devil even knows you're there.

First performance I've heard where they went low on "land of the FREE", instead of jumping up 8 octaves. They do have a good bass voice.
