Whitney Houston's performance at Super Bowl XXV 1991 is probably my favorite.

My first thought too.

I don't have the skill to post a video, but the Hendrix guitar version is my favorite performance of the anthem.

Whitney had the voice of an angel. Too bad she was gone so soon.

.

LeAnn Rimes, with her exceptional voice has constantly performed the National Anthem with respect.

This is her at around 14 or 15 years old singing at MLB's 1997 All Star Game:

She was "cancelled" by the NFL due to vaccine status and made a minor news blip last year. I thought it was a rather nice rendering.

The anthem is about America, not the singer. It should be performed with dignity, as written, to a certain tempo, and without superfluous vocalizations or frills. IMO.

My favorite rendition is by the Academy choirs at Super Bowl XXXIV. I could do without the US Army Herald Trumpets, they kind of take away from the singers. But the choirs have it right, as it is supposed to be sung.

When in doubt, mumble

As good as that video is, it still doesn't show the level of intensity or how loud it would get when Wayne sang. You could stand there and shout into the ear of the guy standing next to you and he couldn't hear you. Brings back memories of what Chicago was like before the Communists took it over.
