Originally posted by honestlou: It was clearly a fumble, as there was zero control of the ball as his hand came forward. In other words, just because his hand was moving forward doesn't mean it was a pass. Plenty of good, slow motion video that clearly showed that. Likewise, it was a fumble recovery as the player controled the ball with a foot still inbounds.
And I am an unbiased observer.
I was rooting for GA and I agreed it was a fumble. Yes the ball moved forward but you can influence the direction of a ball without having control of it.

I literally have ZERO horses in this race, but if that ball had bounced, like it did, and a Georgia player picked it up and ran it down to the end zone, every person on this planet would have said that it was an incomplete pass because of the literal physics of the play.
But, that's not because of any change in the actual play, but rather Nick pushing the remote control "change call" button in his pocket.
Good game at the end, good on Georgia finally getting one.

Calls in that game were weird. Seems like most of the first half, Bama got all the calls (or no calls, on interference).
During halftime - the refs decided they were fucking up and for the last half of the game they either split even or gave GA the benefit of the doubt.
I called the play in question a forward pass - and I agree that had GA picked up the ball it would have been blown dead and called an incomplete pass.

Aggie here and I call it a fumble, it was coming out of his hand, you can see the ball separating then his arm moves forward.
Good SEC defensive game last night.

I doubt anyone with any objectivity can deny it could be viewed as either a fumble or incompletion by a ref at game speed. Would you say he's incompetent or a nitwit for calling it either, or just possibly he had to pick one since it was so close? Which means the play is close enough to either that a review wouldn't overturn it, so the play stands as called. Not all fumbles just drop straight to the ground and seldom is anyone called for batting or illegal forward passing. Any forward movement doesn't only happen by throwing, just releasing gripping pressure can propel the ball.
I'm not sure if that was a fumble or incompletion. Maybe with better camera angles and resolution I could come to a conclusion. I also don't know what criteria leagues conclude something is a forward pass. I imagine it's more complicated from what us sideline ref wannabees think.
Possibly it would be safer and have less dramatic impact on the game if refs' default call when it's close or aren't sure if it's a fumble or incompletion to call it an incompletion. If it isn't under scrutiny it'll get overturned. If it's so close as to not overturn the call, then it remains the less impactful to the game result. A possession change with a short field has a big impact on the game. It should be quite sure if that is what happened if that is decided.
Maybe this whole situation comes down to as simple a thing as if he was grasping the ball when it went forward, as in the thumb is in contact with the ball and not just flipped with the fingers. This message has been edited. Last edited by: pbslinger,

I'm not a college football fan so I consider myself impartial, to me it was an incomplete pass.
The ball traveled well along the path of his arm motion as a pass would.

I can't wait for the next time some QB "fumbles" the ball forward, off the ground, into the hands of a teammate that can run a 3 second 100yrd dash.
I hope it happens against every human on this planet that thinks that that ball was fumbled, and I hope they call it the "Forward Flopsie I Love Nick Saban's Naughty Bits" play.
For posterity.

Great game - would have been nice to see Bama playing with all their offensive weapons but sometimes it's the most "durable" team that wins the championship.
No doubt Saban and Co. will be back in the playoff race next year.

The ball was coming out of his hand before it started forward. It doesn't matter that it propelled the ball forward after that. It's a fumble.

Lol, classic. I can tolerate college ball but all I can muster is, "I don't know". You know, in the voice of the parking lot mechanic guy.

Clearly an incomplete pass.
If the ball was loose before his hand moved forward the ball wouldn't have gone forward ten yards. That's not a fumble. That's a disrupted pass, doesn't matter if the ball moves an inch or a yard.
And I don't give a damn about either of these teams, but glad a BS call was ultimately not the deciding factor for the game.

Sure it would. The hand can still be behind the ball enough to propel it forward even if there is no grip on the ball anymore. That's why it went so far sideways rather than forward.

Fumble but recovering player stepped out before possession so should have stayed GA ball. Didn’t matter though. Funny when my kids come home from school on Monday and say the other kids are talking about the big game tonight. And we live in Florida. Lol
Between the World Series the college Football title and if Herschel Walker can leverage this UGA win to win the senate seat it will be a good year for my friends to the north.
