Why it’s named “horseradish” Login/Join

I wondered, and found this:

“The name horseradish is believed to come from a variation of the German name for it, which is “meerrettich” meaning sea radish. The English were said to mispronounce the German word “meer” and began calling it “mareradish.” Eventually it was called horseradish.”

https://saucemagazine.com/a/90...capital-of-the-world

I suspected it would be something like that. There are many similar misnomers. But the interesting linked article also has this snippet:

“Believe it or not, the Collinsville [Illinois] area grows sixty percent of the world’s horseradish supply.”

I’ve only lately come to appreciate horseradish. I don’t eat it straight, but like horseradish sauce. After trying many, my favorite is Beaver brand “Deli” Horseradish Sauce:

It has good flavor, and it’s mild enough that I can use a lot of it (to get more flavor) without getting my sinuses blown out the back of my head.

OK, so why was it called a Sea Raddish?

Beaver brand has some good products. I like several of their mustards.
I'll have to try their horseradish sauce.

Beaver also offers a “Cream Horseradish” that’s zippier than the “Deli Horseradish”.

St. Elmo's cocktail sauce, when fresh at the restaurant, is an experience. You can buy it in a jar too but it's not quite as powerful.

With an oyster on a saltine. Tabasco is ok, but horseradish is better.

Pretty darn good on a chicken sammich made with straight breast meat too!

Have to limit my intake tho, the resulting heartburn is pretty intense.

Try a side of roast beef or prime rib with it next time. I agree, a bowl of straight horseradish is nasty.

Except for cocktail sauce I agree. I like cole slaw but I have to remember to ask if a restaurant's recipe has horseradish in it before I order.

Served straight, it's waaay too hot for me, but when mixed with the right amount of sour cream ("Creamed") it's fantastic! These days I use it on every kind of beef or pork roasts, steaks, etc.., and even chicken.

The vast majority of wasabi served with Sushi is actually horseradish with some green food coloring. Why? Because real wasabi root loses its' potency and flavor really fast after getting mashed up. Cost also is a huge factor of course.

Horseradish is great in cocktail sauce and with beef, maybe some on a sandwich, or with sushi.

I love St. Elmo’s cocktail sauce! I go through a couple of bottles a month. I put it mainly on my Friday fish fry. Great on French fries, as well!

It's garden carp. Better figure out a way to contain it or it will take over like honeysuckle.

But damn, it's good.

I'm a fan. Like it on roast beef and also with lamb, and various meats on a sandwich.

I like it so hot it cleans your sinuses.
