(Reuters) -Global streaming giant Netflix Inc on Tuesday reported losing subscribers for the first time in more than a decade and predicted more contraction in the second quarter, a rare miss for a company that has been a reliable growth engine for investors.

The company's stock plunged 23% in after-market trading, erasing $30 billion in market value.

Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers in its first quarter, falling well short of its forecast of adding 2.5 million subscribers. Its decision in early March to suspend service in Russia after it invaded Ukraine resulted in the loss of 700,000 members.

The company's poor results pummeled other video streaming-related stocks, with Roku dropping over 6%, Walt Disney falling 3% and Warner Bros Discovery down 2%.

Netflix, which currently has 221.6 million subscribers, last reported a loss in customers in October 2011.

The company offered a gloomy prediction for the spring quarter, forecasting it would lose 2 million subscribers, despite the return of such hotly anticipated series as "Stranger Things" and "Ozark" and the debut of the film "The Grey Man," starring Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling. Wall Street targeted 227 million for the second quarter, according to Refinitiv data.

Yeah, it's big news.
There are a lot of reasons and YES perhaps the woke programming is a part of it but this is a lot more than that.
Industry competition, inflated prices and the shear number of options today are a part.
Not surprising as it is a more an evolution than a revolution, IMO.

They'll never see another penny from me after the cuties SNAFU. I really liked some of their shows, but I won't fund them and the Obama crime family and their programming.

What? Child porn, obama, and an over reliance on foreign content not doing it for them?

That's a shame.

Agreed - it isn't the woke programming, much as we might not like that.

It is the huge number of competitors and dilution in the streaming business. Every content producer has a streaming service.

I finally got a Netflix subscription a few months ago. I seldom watch network television programming and was looking for a source of movies

To say that I’ve been underwhelmed by the selection and the lack of programming that I sound find interesting will add me to the subscriber loss number on May 1.

They've got a bunch of good stuff, to include a number of overseas pictures but, they also have a an enormous amount of garbage to include 'woke content' that's turned me off.
Seeing Reed Hastings' company taking it in the shorts is a good day, he's arguably one of the most aggressive Democrat donors over the last 20-years.

Yup.

A lot will want to ascribe it to "Go woke, go broke," but that's probably only a small, possibly insignificant portion of the reason. Bigger reasons are as you mentioned, plus the Wu Flu Scaredemic winding down, so more people spending less time watching.

Industry analysts are predicting an across-the-board streaming industry hit, though perhaps not as big a hit as NF has taken. Then again: NF had a much bigger share than the rest of them, so more to lose in the first place.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ We find something interesting to watch on NF more often than not.

I'm sure two price increases within a little over a year didn't help their ability to retain subscribers either...

We cancelled them a few months back after the monthly price hit like $16.99 and we realized we barely used them anymore. The couple of shows my kids liked on there we've been able to find on other streaming services for the most part.

They now beg me weekly to come back for $9.99...like a jilted lover Roll Eyes

It’s looking like that price hike cost them 200,000 viewers last month and then expected 2 million more over this year.

We too did not renew. I don’t feel that their content is anywhere worthy of the price.

Eff ‘em

Thanks for the heads up. I've been waiting for this to come out. Time to renew my subscription. Roll Eyes

Yes, they've got a lot of stuff many of us would regard as crap, too. So does HBO Max. So does Amazon Prime. So, too, I imagine, does Disney.

Suggestion: If you don't like it, it offends you, whatever: Don't watch it. Easy.

Right now my wife and I are watching, believe-it-or-not, Gilmore Girls. About as "wholesome" a sitcom as one could ask for.

Last night we watched In The Line Of Fire. Excellent.
