ZSMICHAELMy mom received her stimulus check today
These are the kinds of things government auditors find three or four years later. I would send an email to your Senator and ask as to the proper disposition. Do not cash the check. After Katrina many people applied for housing assistance and the like. Five years later the government demands the money back because the individual does not have a utility bill in their name or other proof that they were in that residence when Katrina hit. They threaten a felony charge if they do not plead guilty.

It's not like we need it but would like to donate it to a good cause. I only except money that I earn, certainty not a freebie from a source that will have to be payed for by taxpayers.

Oh I bet if you owed them money, they sure as hell would figure out a way to make sure you're alive and collect that money by any means necessary.

BytesMy neighbors brother died 3 years ago... She just got a check with his name on it and a deceased remark, no executor remark (although she is). WTF? Uncle Sam knows they are dead yet still mail the check. My advice to the neighbor was to not cash the check. I think that would avoid future problems.

rburgI'm still waiting. Wife looks every day, no joy. Youngest son got his weeks ago and spent it already. I want mine to fatten my checking account. Money makes me happy.

braillediverIt was written and passed in a week? The amount of fraud and waste is staggering if anyone looked.
Cash'em and be happy- No one's going to come looking for those checks.

McGregorFunny stuff for sure.
My dad passed in January this year and his stimulus was direct deposited 2 weeks ago but still hasn't received his tax return which was electroniclly filed February 18.
No way at this point to contact the IRS so I'll sit on it. I figure they will probably undeposit it at some point.

Outfitter33My 16 yr old daughter received a stimulus check today. We have not received anything yet. Our accountant informed us there is no way to return it. Cash it, put in savings account and wait. She filed a 2018 tax return as a dependent and is still listed as a dependent on our taxes. How many of these checks are going to people that don’t qualify? She actually turned 16 5 days ago. Unbelievable.

GWbikerI haven't received my check yet, but I did get a phone call this morning from "Audrey at Social Security" who wanted me to help update their files by giving them my SS number.
I said, sure Audrey, it's: 123456789.
She hung up on me. The nerve of some people.

yaniciNothing here yet. The site that we use to check out what is going on with our payment says that I'm eligible and will update when it goes out to my bank. I really can't understand the delay.

Just so you know, this topic is being debated on a couple of estate planning attorney listservs that I'm on. Opinion is divided on whether the checks should be returned.

The people on the listserves can debate what they want, but the IRS has now clearly stated that checks sent to people who are ineligible have to be returned. If the IRS doesn’t get the money back, it’s the individuals who the IRS will come after, not some estate planning attorneys arguing on the internet.

Where has the IRS stated this?
I've seen where the Secretary of the Treasury has said the money should be returned. But I have not seen anything directly from the IRS.
Edit: Just did a google search and see now reports of the IRS saying the money must be returned.
