Keeping the economy moving since 1964 |
I was surprised to receive a stimulus check for my mom today. Mom passed away in May, 2018. It was addressed to her, comma, "Deceased" and me, comma, "Executor". Now I need to figure out how to return it. I have not received my stimulus check yet. It is a comfort to know the dead are being taken care of before the living. ----------------------- You can't fall off the floor.

My MIL received hers last week, along with a check for my FIL who passed away over a year ago. Apparently for folks who haven't filed 2019 taxes they are going by who was still alive in 2018. Can you imagine how many other dead people got checks? No wonder they still want to vote.

A very well thought out plan with no real oversight. How many billions of the trillions will this amount to?

AFAIK you don't need to return it, I remember reading that somewhere. Yes, it's wasteful and it shows exactly why American bureaucracy is so bad. You'd think it would be a simple cross reference between the IRS and Social Security. “Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present Generation to preserve your Freedom! I hope you will make good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven, that I ever took half the Pains to preserve it.” ― John Adams "Fire can be our friend; whether it's toasting marshmallows, or raining down on Charlie." - Principal Skinner.

No good deed goes unpunished |
I posted this in another thread, but here goes again. According to Forbes, this happened back in 2010 as well. "The 2010 checks were in the amount of $250....approximately 72,000 deceased taxpayers received checks after they passed away. If a similar number of dead taxpayers receive stimulus checks this year, the total will be a staggering $86,400,000."

Sorry for your loss. This is a pretty well known issue to have received a check for a deceased. At one time they were a tax payer and the federal processing was based on people who had paid tax in 2019. There is still uncertainty what the criteria will be for people in you situation. I would deposit it into an a separate account and wait for the dust to settle. Cheers~

If I can't return it and can indeed keep it I plan on donating the money to our town's food shelf. I think mom would be good with that. ----------------------- You can't fall off the floor.

You can always send the money (back) to the Treasury. _________________________________________________________________________ “A man’s treatment of a dog is no indication of the man’s nature, but his treatment of a cat is. Also got one for my mom, who passed in June of last year. Same deal, her name followed by DEC (I assume for deceased) followed by my name as the personal representative. As far as keeping it, there have been some articles where “experts” have opined that you can keep it (mostly based on previous similar money shotguns from the government), it looks like this time Treasury Secretary Muncher wants you to give it back. https://www.marketwatch.com/st...chin-says-2020-04-29 But, they don’t say how.

If it’s a physical check, no need to return it. All you need to do is shred it and drive on. No money goes anywhere until the check is negotiated (cashed or deposited). If the estate is still open, I suppose you could deposit it to an estate account and do whatever seems appropriate. (The donation seems like a good idea.) Being a wuss about such things, I’d likely just take a nice picture it as an example of .gov stupidity and incompetence then run it through the shredder and forget about it.

Both my wife and I are on SS and haven't received our stimulus yet. Anyone else? Jim ________________________ "If you can't be a good example, then you'll have to be a horrible warning" -Catherine Aird

My wife and I decided that if/when we receive a check, we'd donate it to the President Trump campaign.

My folks both passed last year. I received checks for them, too. We haven't filed their 2019 taxes yet, because I can't get into the social security office to get their statement of benefits and good luck getting them on the phone. It's funny that the medical examiner's office is required to immediately send death notification to the SS office so that SS payments are immediately shut off and yet, there's no interface between the IRS and SS. I'm sure they'll owe taxes and we were planning to pay them. I can't decide what to do about all of it.
