I just heard a discussion about this, a good question was raised. How come so many Brit popular music is sung with American accents? I'm sure most know this song more from Stangelove than it's meaning to WWll Britain. Set the controls for the heart of the Sun.

TMK Miss Lynn, whom I met many years ago when she was only in her seventies, sings with a delightfully English accent.

Beautiful voice, sung from the heart. A sad optimism from a time of hardship for so many. LS1 - ‘Floyd put me on to her music from that particular song.

accents generally do not come thru when a song is sung, as a high school/college age in the early 80's, first thing I thought of was lyrics from a Gary Numan song, Old men love war songs Love Vera Lynn Old men love war songs Now I'm Vera Lynn https://chandlersfirearms.com/chesterfield-armament/
