These may be different times. Back then, the Dems were willing to lay off of the whole sexual harassment thing in order to protect Bill Clinton. Now, there doesn't seem to be anyone the Dems want to protect all that badly.

He will hold on like grim death, a lingering bad smell. He won't be re-elected, I'm sure.

You obviously are not familiar with Minnesota voters.

Never understood why any Senator wants to be President. Senators are the Crown Princes of our system. Incredible benefits and none of the responsibility or scrutiny of being President.

Yes, Al can console himself with the thought that if only this hadn't happened, he'd have been elected POTUS in 2020.

That's laughable, of course, but he needs a salve for his ego.

You know, for when he's in seclusion in the west wing.

He only won his own election by a few hundred votes.

Franken's own office confirms he will step down on January 2, 2018. Further the governor's office has started to look for a replacement - per an NPR report this morning.

Can we stop hypothesizing about this being a sinister plot or ruse?

I'll bet you a steak dinner that Franken will formally resign.

Being a Senator is a vast tax payer funded ego trip. There is very little actual work. There is the constant matter of making sure you get your way on every detail you concern yourself with. Like I heard one judicial nominee say, he was sponsored by a Senator who raised the money and by another who spent the money so his confirmation was assured.

They get their way because there are so few, and even the President usually has to treat them with respect, at least heretofore. If you aren’t already an ego maniac, it is very difficult to avoid succumbing to that odious malady.

Presidents who have been Senator include Obama, Nixon, L. Johnson, Kennedy, Truman, Harding, B. Harrison, A. Johnson, Buchanan, Pierce, Tyler, Wm. Harrison, Van Buren, Jackson, J.Q. Adams and Monroe.

I was frankly surprised that the Governor of Minnesota did not make a deal to resign and have his successor appoint him to the job.

It was smart to drag his feet. He was there in case something happened where his vote was essential. Congress will adjourn for the holidays to reconvene after Jan. 2 when his successor will be sworn in.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Remember the first rule of politics. The ballots don't make the results, the counters make the results.

The old Washington joke that "every Senator looks in the mirror and sees a President" was ironically coined by Al Gore Sr., who's kid certainly did.

That exact thing happened back in the 70s. The next election cycle the Republicans took everything.

In this case, Dayton has already been a Senator.
