Years ago I attended an industrial training course for an Allen Bradley logic controller. There was a young Asian lad in the class who was very sharp and I am sure went places in that area of employment. He was somewhat naive having recently immigrated and a couple of us older fellows took him aside to give him a bit of advice regarding making a name change here stateside. His given name was Phuc which I am sure in his culture was just fine but probably not an asset here in the U.S.A. We suggested Fred or Paul to give him a hint. Don't know if he took it to heart but suspect he did. I couldn't imagine going into a factory to do service work and telling the receptionist that my name was Phuc without getting some sort of adverse reaction.

Working for an automotive company about 20 years ago, I got a call from a guy whose last name was Messerschmitt, so I asked if he had heard that joke. He laughed and said he had. Turned out he was the son of Willie Messerschmitt!
