A recent sale here, and USPS theft of package contents
Briefly, I recently sold a pistol to a member here, FFL to FFL. The member informed me that two of the promised four magazines were missing.

I will fill in the blanks once I have more information, but as it stands now, the receiving post office *did* contact me to tell me that the package had evidence of tampering. The package was insured and had special Priority handling.

I opened a case initially (this is what generated the response from the receiving PO), and just today escalated it to the USPS Office of the Inspector General.

I thought the outcome might be useful for those who have their FFL ship through the Post Office.

I can't quite grasp why the big shipping agencies have workers who steal things. They certainly are paid well and I am sure background checked prior to getting the jobs there.

The world seems one great big rotten apple any more of people taking property which they have agreed to ship properly and safely. As for the case at the USPS, it will take some time but they should repay you for the taken property.

I see local news accounts occasionally of postal employees stealing cards that contain money to prescription drugs, to just throwing away mail so they don't have to deliver it.

A certain percentage of people in every occupation will do the wrong thing.

Some people have no integrity no matter how much they're paid and that goes all the way to the CEOs even.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." My discussions with two employees at the receiving PO has been revealing. Apparently there is routine damage to packages "caused by equipment". An employee told me that the loose and damaged items are collected and sent to Atlanta, where they might be able to be recovered under a claim.

In my case, the box was tampered with. A clean slice right across the insurance/tracking sticker. If a Postal Inspector had opened it, it would have been noted as such, either by a form or notice tucked in the box, or a stamp on the outside of the box, or both, I have been told.

Thankfully an honest employee snapped a photo of the box when it passed through his hands.

What HRH says - being rich or poor doesn't define integrity.

I've seen sailors with beautiful wives at home rent anything on two legs when overseas and guys with wives on the opposite end of the spectrum not even look at the foreign women.

It's all about integrity.

Might've had a better chance with getting away with it if guns were not involved.

I don't doubt anything you say, but why would they steal two magazines only? And not the gun itself?

No idea. How many of the boxes (that are obviously guns) routinely opened and rummaged through?

I recently had a box from Amazon tampered with. Idle air control for my Ranger. Postman brought it up, he had found the empty box. They had sent the empty box back to Amazon, then he found my part and dropped it off to me. When I asked about the box, he said 'someone probably cut it open'.

If I were inspector general, I'd seed some glitter bombs into the queue, I'd find that bastard.

Hate thieves.

Nothing from USPS or the OIG yet, other than what I've already posted. I called the OIG, only to be told that I just needed to be patient as they are dealing with a backlog. I was told I could check the status of my complaint online.
