Not only would I not drive cross country unarmed, but I’ve driven cross country twice, and both times I had firearms with me. I also had the advantage of starting with my firearms.

All this advice about staying on the interstate is of dubious value. Every interstate goes through a major city, and invariably a bad part of said city. Take Chicago as an example. If you are taking an interstate around the southern end of Lake Michigan, it goes through Chicago, and at least one sketchy part of the city. Also, you get west of the Mississippi River there is a whole lot of empty.

I’m with those proposing to fly in as close as possible outside of NY, store the firearm with someone trustworthy, and pick it up on the way home.

The Shockwave is not a “shotgun” under federal law and is unlikely to be legal everywhere. And it cannot be purchased outside of your home state because it is not a “shotgun”. I mentioned this in my earlier post. I suggested that a shotgun could be purchased at his first opportunity and could be brought along for the trip home.

Someone has mentioned a cane. Perhaps wasp spray? It’s been a while, but it seems people used to tout that as somewhat effective on larger pests as well. A good hammer should be legal everywhere as well. You can even get a “holster” for your hammer.

Just put a couple of Coexist/ Biden stickers on
your rear window. Nobody will bother you east
of the Mississippi

How about the 1st ‘free’ State, buying some defensive spray of sorts?

That & then avoiding crummy areas along the way.
