I go everywhere unarmed so yeah. I get why you don’t want to. Shipping your piece to a friendly member and picking it up on your way back seems like a good solution to your problem.

In NY you would be. You don’t need a pistol license to own one. But if you have the means to fire it (powder, caps, ball) you better have one as they treat it the same as any other handgun then. NY makes up its own rules, even when they’re contrary to the law.

Yes, I understand. I was also just adding my opinion along with admiring your effort. I started looking into mapping out routes when I'm driving. For California which would be a regular drive, I would just have to make sure I have 10-round mags and confirm my locked box satisfies the law. But as for the rest of the states, it just seemed torturous. I was nervous enough to make sure not only is my radar detector unplug and not visible but also that it's not readily accessible.

When I went to Washington, DC, I had it only unplugged and not visible. But I found out afterwards, it can't even be in the vehicle at all.

Through this forum, I picked up a cane from cane masters years ago when I didn't need a cane. I keep it in the car on the floor by my drivers side. It has a longer reach than the 6 cell maglite I used to have in the same spot.

Maybe someone knows since my google-fu is failing me right now and it's been a long night of domestic after domestic.

Say he ships it to an FFL01 for repair (i.e. cleaning) and it's more than same day, so the FFL logs it in his book. When the repair is done, can the FFL "ship" it back to the owner and the owner happens to be in person?

or just shipping it to a trustworthy SIGForum member would be the simplest route?

No, I have a Texas carry permit and I would do my homework on what states recognize such. In other states I would stick it in the trunk or whatever with mag removed.

A little off topic - but if you are taking a Northern route prepare for some snowfall in WY and MT in the coming weeks.

I've driven in about 38 states, cross country multiple times just in the past couple of months. I don't plan on finding trouble, I don't plan on having a fire, I don't plan on getting into a car accident. But I am always armed, keep a fire extinguisher handy and always wear my seat belt.

The choice isn't always yours. There are some fucked up, deranged people in this world who seem to be hell bent on preying on others. This is why we are armed, not to look for trouble, but to have an answer to trouble if it finds us.

But my road tripping is probably different from most here. I don't stop at hotels. If I'm driving solo, I'll stop at rest stops during the day to sleep and at Buc-ee's during the night to sleep. If my family is with me, we likely will not stop at a hotel but that also means our pitbull and boxer are with us. They're a decent deterrent to shit heads.

Always be prepared and never take your safety for granted.

As for your driving, instead of Florida, fly into a neighboring state and do a one way rental. If the rental car is too much, rent a Uhaul truck if it's cheaper. Yes, someone I know actually did that.

No problem if the FFL is in the state in which the owner resides.

The FFL has little reason to be "cute" with the rules and risk their livelihood for a stranger and $30

Taking the SS Badger / ferry across Lake Michigan is a nice option.

It's seasonal! You have until 10 Oct.

Yes. I would strongly prefer to be (legally) armed but if I had to I would do so. No way I would take a firearm into New York state.

Yeah, I was looking at that. The one out of Muskegon that lands in Milwaukee? I was formulating a plan. Then that October 10th thing kinda scuttled it.

So, I talked with my mother today. New plan. We wait until spring to move. She wants to put as much of her stuff in a storage facility local to her as she can. The car, the travel trailer, some boxes, etc. Move all that out and get an apartment there so she can continue to drop in and sort and sell stuff. I'm going to argue against any further drawing this out, safest to cut her losses and move on with her life. I'd like to see her park her car and trailer in a storage facility, fly out here and then we'll deal with all this in March or so.

Either way, this would allow us to better prepare, less risk of driving through horrible winter weather, and lower stress overall.

When I rode cross country on the GW, I always carried a handgun, into California, Oregon and even into upper New York state.

Usually in the trunk.

The ferry from Muskegon stops on 25 Oct 2021 for the winter (Lake Michigan freezes over).

The other option instead of a handgun is a “short” birds head grip shotgun like a Shockwave. The shotgun should be legal everywhere and you can have ammo in a locked box where that’s necessary and carry in a backpack/duffle. If you need some Aguila short shells, I’d be happy to help.
