I was just in ORD. It resembles a large Wal-Mart. Or a swap meet / flea market. Pajamas seem to be the air travel fashion of the day. Roll Eyes

Civility and manners on board while the goon squad feels up the passengers beforehand. Can’t make this shit up.

Forget air travel. Just society in general. Then air travel will be taken care of by default. It's sad and tragic what passes as fashion, hip and manners. Acceptable behavior is rare.

I agree.

Education is the primary responsibility of parents. Many, if not most, have abdicated that responsibility. They think it will be done by schools, where they drop kids off and really have no idea what sort of indoctrination is going on for 8 hours.

Most schools today are government run schools.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Taken to the logical conclusion, let's just kill everyone with less than an 800 credit score. But of course, we'll have to decide on which credit agencie to get the reliable credit data...nah, never mind, let's just kill a bunch of people.

I'll still be here when it's over btw, but who's going to flip my burgers when I want one?

You suggested killing people based on credit score, not him. Why would would ask him who is going to flip your burger?

Probably two, and that original generation was taught by whom?

As much as I like the idea of bringing civility to air travel, it’s not going to happen.
There’s a decent amount of people out there that can’t act like “People”.

What’s that saying? “Spats on a pig”?
Yeah.

Take a look around you: Pajamas.
You’re going to try and regulate what people wear on an airplane when they think it’s acceptable to walk outside wearing pajamas.

If I were king, flip flops and sandals would be outlawed with the exception of on a beach, or at a swimming pool.

I fly in running or low cut hiking shoes, long pants, and a fishing shirt, as it has pockets for all the shit you need when flying. My thought isn't for my fellow travelers, it's to get out of the airplane in emergency conditions and have a better chance of not getting cut or burned.

I don't care what my fellow travelers think of my attire. If you want me to wear a sport jacket, I'm perfectly willing to do so. I only ask that you provide adequate seat room, leg room, and air conditioning for such an outfit to be comfortable.

I think that people are reacting to two things; one is obviously the decline of public standards of dress that has been going on since the '70s, and the other is the distinct discomfort involved in air travel.

I wore sandals once, in an attempt to not have to take my shoes off. Made a conscious choice to limit my safety to have more convenience. I had to take them off anyway, and go through the nasty scanner barefoot. Never did that again. I also tried a nylon belt with no metal so I didn't have to take that off. Nope, remove the plastic buckle web belt anyway, and hold your pants up like a clown when going through all the searching.

People react to their environment and adapt. You make things uncomfortable and a hassle, people adapt. Flying right now encourages light, easily shifted, comfortable clothing, shoes that are easy to remove and put back on, no belts, no metal, etc. Hell, in today's environment, a classic pair of 501 jeans with metal fly buttons will get you a package check from the obersturmgruppenfuhrer.

Plus, there are the people, and I don't just mean the passengers. "Move here", "Stand There", "Hurry Up", "This is 4.2 ounces, not 4.0 ounces, in the trash it goes" "Remove that", "Hey, you don't need to remove that", "No liquid allowed; I know it's in an airport cup, or fully sealed, I don't care - Chug it or chuck it", "you weren't here three hours early so you are fucked", "I don't care if that was a carry-on this morning with our airline, this afternoon its a checked bag, give me $75 bucks", "why do you smell like gasoline and gunpowder", I mean, I could go on, but there is really nothing nice about flying these days and discourtesy comes with the territory.

I go out of my way to be nice, and still sometimes find myself pretty raged up, and reminding myself that the person in front of me is not the one causing the problem; rather it is the whole system that is a terrible mess. In fact, that poor, put upon desk agent in front of me can only help me, so I had better be as nice as possible.

So, I will agree. There is a need for better manners on the part of the flying public, but it's a systemic problem, not just the Spirit $39 dollar weekend crowd.

I guess if you can afford it, you can still travel in relative comfort, but for me, air travel, has felt like a bus ride for a long time. The class of people at the bus station isn’t too great either.

Dress With Respect most likely means don't wear Trump or MAGA gear. Some Karen is going to freak out and start an incident. How many video's have we seen of that? No coincidence things started around Covid. .gov was climbing up everyone's ass trying to control every aspect of your life. People were already stressed out. Some Karen didn't think your mask was adequate or you weren't wearing it right and you got self another incident. I'm proud to say I still walked through that whole mess without ever wearing a mask. Only time is when I went to see my eye doc I had to wear it in the waiting room or I wasn't getting in. Once in the exam room I removed it. Doc came in and said I'm glad I didn't have to tell you to remove your mask. He said it was ridiculous and the only reason I had to have it in his waiting room was if someone reported it they would shut him down.

One thing I also forgot to mention earlier, I also pay attention to wearing clothes that do not burn easily and cover as much skin as possible. Leather is always great in winter.

Stick with cotton and wool. Synthetics will melt, burn and stick to your skin.

I also remember the day when you dressed up to go to the Airport, so did all the airline personnel.
I also remember the gracious hostesses and airline personnel, and NOT being crammed into a small seat with little to no padding.
You did not have to bring a heavy carry on and struggle with it down narrow isles and then struggle to get it up over your seat, if there was a spot available. There was a generous amount of checked baggage allowed and you did not have to sweat the weight of your checked baggage.
The Airlines have some responsibility to make flying more comfortable for the passengers instead of putting everyone in a confrontational mood before the plane even leaves the boarding area.Extra large passengers should be required to buy larger seats so they don't hang out all over the passengers seated next to them, maybe buy a first class seat.
Anyone who presents a problem to the other travelers should be put on a no fly list or if dressed in a provocative manner refused entry to the plane.
