DC Public Schools Sent Email To Families Telling Them To ‘Decolonize’ Their Thanksgiving

By Cassandra Fairbanks
Published November 25, 2021 at 6:42pm

District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) sent an email to families of students telling them to “decolonize” their Thanksgiving.
The email, sent by Chancellor Lewis D. Ferebee, added that Thanksgiving can be “difficult for many.”

“Thanksgiving is a day that can be difficult for many to celebrate as we reflect on the history of the holiday and the horrors inflicted on our indigenous populations. If you celebrate, our Equity team has shared resources for how you can consider decolonizing your Thanksgiving,” the email, which is also posted to their website, said.

The email suggested that “if you host a Thanksgiving meal, consider doing a land acknowledgement.”

They also suggested articles and books, including some for children, on how to “decolonize” your dinner.

Of course, the email also pushed vaccine booster shots.

“During your holiday celebration, I encourage you and your families to stay safe and follow the Stronger & Safer Together Pledge. All eligible members of our community are also encouraged to receive their COVID-19 booster shot,” the email continued. “Find your vaccine card or access your vaccine record by visiting myir.dc.gov, call your healthcare provider to discuss your options for a booster, or visit vaccines.gov to find a location near you. Together, we can help keep our community safe by getting vaccinated, limiting our travel, and avoiding high risk environments.”

Didn't that hamper how well they could cook and clean?

This ignorance and willful blindness will never end. As a thought experiment imagine what kind of history our indigenous peoples might have experienced had Europeans not colonized the American land masses. I don't think I'd be too far out on a limb to contend that they would be rivaling the Afghans for the most dysfunctional and sorry society on the face of the earth. The real truth is that colonization was the best thing that could have possibly happened to them.

Please don't "woke" me, I'm way too tired!

The horrors inflicted by the original settlers were nothing in comparison to the horrors the indigenous people inflicted upon one another.

One of the things that we were thankful for yesterday is that the last head hunting expedition by the Makaw in Washington was in 1919. That was the year my mother was born so it's like yesterday to us. We're fine now.

And here I had thought we all “decolonized” in 1776 for which we are all very thankful!

I did a land acknowledgement personally.

I acknowledged that my ancestors came over and took the land from whatever tribe was currently occupying it, and that prior to people who knew how to write arriving, we really don’t know whose land it was originally. Europeans didn’t invent violence and they also didn’t introduce it to this country. Indian tribes were raping, killing and pillaging before the white man arrived.

I acknowledge that I didn’t have shit to do with any of it and that the land I own is mine. I worked for it, I paid for it and I’ll fight for it if I have to. Screw this racist bullshit trying to make white kids feel bad for something they didn’t do. I hate this stuff.

Yes. Two former British colonies (US and Cameroon) gathered together in thankfulness. Not a single Brit was invited Wink

This.

History is way more complicated than the cartoonish version pushed by the hate America crowd.

As far as I can tell, the DC public school system is an absolute failure for the vast majority of students that have to attend them. Maybe Chancellor Free-be should focus on improving the education they receive and stop putting his nose into what other people are doing on their holiday's.
