Celebrities who vowed to leave the United States after the election
Rumors are flying that Bruce Springsteen has vowed to leave the country if Donald Trump wins the 2024 election. He didn’t say it.

But false promises of leaving the country if a celebrity didn’t get their way has been a real thing and not always said in jest.

Here’s a list of famous people who promised to leave the country if Trump were elected. I hope you didn't bet money on them leaving since none did.


Miley Cyrus
In 2016, Cyrus wanted Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton, and when that nomination didn’t happen posted this on Instagram:


Raven-Symone
She vowed the following insanity:

“My confession for this election is if any Republican gets nominated, I'm going to move to Canada with my entire family. I already have my ticket."

Gets nominated? Uh, one always gets nominated. Anyway, she never moved to Canada.


Amy Schumer
“My act will change because I will need to learn to speak Spanish because I will move to Spain or somewhere. It’s beyond my comprehension if Trump won. It’s just too crazy.”

Once he won, she had a very different statement.

“Anyone saying pack your bags is just as disgusting as anyone who voted for this racist, homophobic, openly disrespectful woman abuser. Like the rest of us, I am grieving today."


Samuel L. Jackson
“If that mother—er becomes president, I’m moving my black ass to South Africa.”

He became president. Jackson’s black ass remained in the United States.


Bryan Cranston
“Absolutely, I would definitely move.”

He didn’t move.


Lena Dunham
This one was so bold she swore she would move out of the country and called out others who only said they would and really wouldn’t.

"I know a lot of people have been threatening to do this, but I really will. I know a lovely place in Vancouver.”

Trump became president. She never moved.

Neve Campbell
Campbell is already a Canadian native and, in 2016, vowed to move back home should Trump win the White House.

She didn’t move and had not much to say after he won.


Chelsea Handler
The comic and author said this in 2016:

“I did buy a house in another country just in case…so all these people that threaten to leave the country and then don’t — I actually will leave that country.”

She didn’t leave. Then, she lamely said she was only staying because her co-workers begged her to. "Everyone in my office is like, 'You have a responsibility, you have a voice, and you need to use it, and you have to be here.”

I’ve wanted to move for years, but with a mom in law who has dementia and is in assisted living, I am stuck here as long as she is still with us.

I would have more respect for them if they did in fact leave. For now, I’ll give them the benefit of doubt that they are preparing their real estate and buttoning down their affairs. After all, he is President elect at the moment but come January 20, 2025 don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out.

Maybe they found out that countries they actually would want to move to don't just let people waltz across the border and settle in like they belong there.

A few of them already have a residence in another country . They'll take a long weekend there and have their Publicist put out a statement saying that they are leaving the U.S. , etc. Then they'll show back up like nothing happened and say that they had commitments , and it'll all die down . The rest of them will pretend they never said it and continue to whine and cry and cash their checks .

I know this thread is in jest; everyone knows these leftist brats aren’t going anywhere. I wish someone with some real clout would publicly call them out in a heavily viewed venue and brand them as the liars they obviously are. Make them renege, make lame excuses, and then ask why they’d say something so patently ridiculous in the first place.

All talk no action. We heard this all 8 years ago and I don't know of a single person who had the follow through.

Celebrities are celebrities because other people pay attention to them. If other people stopped doing that, the ones who are famous now would join the legions of other ex-famous people.

Becoming famous, though, and having other people hang on everything they do and even say regardless of whether it’s approval or condemnation is a drug, and like any addictive drug once they’ve tasted it, they don’t want to lose it. Fame can of course lead to fortune as well, but even without fortune fame helps satisfy the compelling basic drive that evolution has given us communal animals to influence other people: The first step toward influence and then power at some level is attracting attention. That’s the reason for the epidemic of bizarre behaviors that has infected our society in recent times: “Look at me, look at me.” People do and therefore the behaviors continue.

Statements like, “I’ll leave the country if …,” don’t have to be made with the slightest intention of resulting in actual action; it’s simply enough if they attract attention and provide another shot of the fame drug. There is, of course, no reason why anyone else should pay any heed to their attention-grabbing words and deeds, but as long as people keep supplying the fixes, the junkies will continue to take them.

If you ask them they'll just spout some bullshit rhetoric about how they decided to stay on and fight the evil conservatives , etc. It's for the children .

I'm waiting for the "celebrities" that said they would kill themselves to honor their promises. Like Bette Midler and her Drano. Or U2's singer Bono who stated he would drive a car off a cliff if Trump is elected.
