Each beautiful morning here (all year) I can have breakfast on the patio. The humming of hummingbirds and the buzz of bees is accompanied by full-auto bursts of 5.56 from the Carlos Hathcock firing range at Miramar MCAS, just over the hill.
Those lovely sounds are frequently interrupted by a flight of F/A-18s landing.
I am always saddened that I don’t have access to the USMC range.

I have been to Chabot a lot. And my experience, a lot of people getting yelled at deserved it, 100%.

I have been swept by muzzles a dozen times in one afternoon, being swept was a common occurrence on weekends. One time, my 10 yo son and I went downrange to check our targets during a ceasefire, and some brain surgeon decides to start fiddling with his rifle in the next lane. Some of us hit the ground immediately, my son and I included, while the rangemaster was yelling into the intercom and the R.O rushed over to yell at the guy and push him away from the bench, who was perturbed that he was treated in that manner. Another time, some idiot next to us was messing with his handgun, discharging it up into the ceiling above the lane my wife and I were shooting, basically shooting at a 45 degree angle. The R.O saw this and kicked his ass out of the range.

I stopped going there on weekends, and eventually just saved my shooting for BLM land trips 3 hours away.

After 30 years in retail sales,
I look at it like this.

It takes special people to offer better than average customer service.

Add too that the ability to take instruction, the ability to NOT show up to work high or drunk.
The ability to offer assistance to paying customers,
And make the customers want to come back for more.

In this day in the retail occupation is a big challenge.

Then all that ,
Pile on gun knowledge, shooting knowledge, safety and maybe a small amount of
emergency medical knowledge.

While closely engaging people who have little or no knowledge of firearms and their handling

Is a lot to ask for the pay they take home.
I would be offering
those folks a very wide bearth.

When is the last time anyone has thanked a R.O.
For coming to work and making that days range experience a pleasant one ?

My weekly shooting group does that every week and also greets them by name when we come in and once a month we bring them the left over edibles that we bring in for our coffee/edibles/bs session. Typically donuts/quiche/some other type of finger food.

We have some great ROs and they're well trained. They don't yell at people, they speak in civilized tones and they deescalate situations instead of escalating them.

The ROs there don't, and neither does the management. My group has been shooting there every week for over 7 years and they're very aware of our attitude towards recreational drugs.

Yes, my State allows recreational marijuana and because of that, my LGS/Indoor range has a sign on the door stating that if you are under the influence of alcohol, prescription drugs or marijuana, you will not be allowed to buy guns or use the facilities.

His point was that "edibles" doesn't mean what you intend it to mean anymore. If you say that, many people will assume you mean pot snacks, especially if you're talking to anyone under the age of 40. Combining a term commonly used for weed brownies, etc. and guns makes for a potentially awkward misunderstanding.

Not that you and your friends partake or your range would permit it.

I thought it was obvious I understood what he was saying. Sorry for the confusion.

Having said that, I've been using the word edibles since I was a kid and I'm not going to change my speech patterns because some loaders want to be high all day. If people misunderstand, I'll just shrug and be on my way.

When you're located in Oakland, and half the people shooting, learned about firearms by screwing around with it on the street, and the other half are retiree's who casually ignore basic rules because, 'I know more than you!', then overbearing range masters is to be expected. I've not be to a public range anywhere, where there wasn't a panoply of stupidity, from both patrons and employees. There's not a lot of youngsters looking to work a shooting range, the VAST majority are world-weary retirees who are working to supplement their social security/pension and aren't 'in the mood' to be nice, affable or, even approachable.

CA of course gets the most grief because its confirmation bias for the rest of the country and with the largest number of gun owners in the country, the possibility of Elmer Fudd or, Doughboy showing up is high. With very little ranges available and a socially anti-gun attitude amongst most govt, bad information abounds and this extends to proper instruction and practice, resulting in a public that has minimal understanding of the machine in their hands.

Best public range I've been to in SF Bay Area is United Sportsman in Concord on the old Navy Weapons base, and even there, my friend who was a range master, would get an endless parade of stupid. From the guy pulling-out 10-guns in 10 different calibers and every one required some fucking-around, to the thug and his friends from nearby Pittsburg who bring-out all their KelTecs and Diamondbacks. Richmond Rod & Gun has their range masters and safety persons all wearing body armor, and a healthy amount of attitude. I do a majority of my shooting for classes in the covered areas, the times I've seen a boyfriends arguing girlfriends, finger disciple problems, wasteful ammo usage or, simply openly complaining about the sun...its stunning.

I guess you're referring to California as that doesn't describe what we've got here in Arizona.

I don't think any of the R.O.s are over 30, most in their low 20s and they're very well trained and don't yell or escalate situations. They quietly teach and deescalate like R.O.s should do on a firearms range. They're also very friendly and we've gotten to know all the ones on our range on a personal level.
