That is the other problem. Our agency has a rigid background process that takes months and yet I see people slip through who should not have been hired from the background and then turn out to be a horrible hire, but are kept on. I just had one recent hire assigned to my unit and as a curious person I simply looked her up on Facebook to see who I would be working with and found her posting pictures of herself both in uniform and at home in very revealing lingerie selfie pics. Horrible judgement. That is a huge red flag and the background investigator either missed it or ignored it. I sent it up my chain of command and she was still hired, still has the pictures posted, and has proven to be one of the worst investigators I have ever worked with; well maybe third worst. I had to be her FTO and I recommend that she was not suitable for the job. Even in one interrogation she asked just a couple of questions, supposedly with 30 years of investigation experience, got no confession, turned the interview over to me, and I got a full confession. Speaking of the lowering of hiring standards, the FBI will now still consider an applicant who is engaged in prostitution in the past. You can literally be involved in the advancement of human trafficking and be hired by the FBI. If you don’t believe me, do a quick Google search.

To increase their hiring prospects. What's the saying? "I'd rather have a sister in a whorehouse than a brother in the fbi", now they can hire both ______________________________________________________________________ "When its time to shoot, shoot. This is not only a LE issue, this is happening in most industries- high tech, retail, restaurants, medical, hospitality, education, government, etc, etc. "I’m not going to read Time Magazine, I’m not going to read Newsweek, I’m not going to read any of these magazines; I mean, because they have too much to lose by printing the truth"- Bob Dylan, 1965

I’ll say it again. It’s always easier to blame human failings on some tool or technology. If you’re willing to blame social media as the scourge, then don’t curse the gun grabbers when they vilify the gun. Q

Social media can amplify and promote human failings. It doesn’t create them out of whole cloth, but it does make them more obvious. Kinda like when people want to hate on ambulance chasing lawyers. They only do that because there are plenty of potential clients out there who want something for nothing (or a lot for very little). If the potential clients told them all to go away, the problem would disappear.

We can't give social media all the credit for this accelerated decline. Let's not forget about its predecessor, the 24 hour cable television channels. Thank you oddball. I hesitated jumping into this thread because of no LEO experience but you said exactly what I’ve seen and experienced in the work world for years. Management is only concerned how their performance looks on paper. Profit/loss/return on investment for the business owners and or stockholders. And to use a line from “Blazing Saddles” “We have to protect our phoney baloney jobs here, gentlemen! We must do something about this immediately! Immediately! Immediately! Harrumph! Harrumph! Social media simply collects all of the idiots and deposits them directly in front of you. It is therefore hard to see any bright side especially once you watch one vid and teach the algorithms that you will remain engaged if it keeps feeding you the same thing. I'm not telling you its nothing but solid gold out there but as in all things, often its the big shiny fool that winds up on stage.

I think social media has had a very bad effect on society in general. Hold onto your pants; with AI it's about to get a lot worse _________________________

Yep. Social media just makes their flaws more visible. "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

Our small department, has it's share of fatties, promotions passed out to unqualified officers, Arm tattoos and facial hair that were never allowed before. A detective that goes 10-8, loads the baby in the city owned Tahoe, drives the baby to daycare and then makes her way to the PD. A huge liability, but the brass looks the other way.

This discussion really hits me in the gut. I had a long diatribe typed out then deleted it. It took almost a decade to get into law enforcement. I tested all over Ohio, KY, Indiana, KS, NC, the feds, etc. All the same, high scores, high marks, etc. All the same: thanks, but no thanks. We relocated to NC because of her job with the US Govt, no interest from NC PD's but I got offer letters from Probation and Parole and the ME Office. I chose the ME's office. I have spent years trying to get back only to be told, I am not qualified. So, they lower the standards even farther and I still cannot get in. A guy I see at the gym, is a retired Deputy Chief of Durham PD. He now says that I am overqualified and not DEI. Even to this day, if you are qualified, educated, fit, and can put your shoes on with velcro-- you are a no go. I have had a ton of soldiers who are top notch, get rejected for no reason. (Except that they are male and cannot check a box.) The same thing the forum members are describing is now happening at a lot of ME offices. It appears that you either have to be fresh out of college, or one of the listed: Female, fat, gaudy tattoos, goofy hair, or have a LGBTQRS hanging or wearing on your uniform. I thought I was just being a grump, or fuddy but apparently not. One of my friends who I served with for six years in the Army, and also happens to work for a WV Police Dept stated: ""If you cannot deal with morons in the reserve unit, two-three days a month, how are you going to deal with the same tards 40-50 hours a week."" Hmmm

^^^ They are intentionally dumbing down our country through DEI. It begins in elementary school. "Some things are apparent.
