Quick disclaimer: No, I'm not trying to run a 240v 30A fixture in a 120v 15a outlet.


I have an LED fixture that runs from 120-277v and pulls only 4.0a max. It came with a cord with a NEMA 6-15p 240v/30A plug on it since it was pulled from an industrial setting. It has a quick disconnect plug on the other end that connects to the fixture so you can daisy chain them together if you prefer.

My question is, I assume there isn't an adapter to quick change the plug at the end, since that would end badly in most scenarios. I assume there's nothing wrong with just cutting the plug off the end and re-wiring it to a 5-15P. I'd rather not have to track down a new cord if I can avoid it.

I've wired cords before so I'm not new to that, but given the voltage change I just wanted to check real quick before starting something.

If the fixture is rated 120-270 volts just change the plug and you are good to go.

Nema 6-15p is a 240v/15amp plug. It may have 2 color(hot) wires with a ground. You will need to mark one with a piece of white tape for your neutral when changing the plug.
