Heard mention of it on a livestream thing about an hour ago that one teacher was wrestling/grappling with the perp after throwing her phone at him. A name wasn't given. Our man apparently got some rounds off when the opportunity arose. More info on this link: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news...5b50c44d93b76b&ei=12

I read one news item that alluded to use of a pump shotgun "No matter where you go - there you are"

It's for the same reason that I started this thread: The effectiveness of this armed citizen is so obvious in this instance, not even the gun-grabbers can deny it. The decisive and courageous behavior of an armed citizen quickly ended what could have been a mass shooting with many deaths. Three minutes from first 911 call to a dead shooter. The value of the armed citizen is undeniable in this instance, so they're not even going to try it this time. So, every time they try to say armed citizens can only be bad thing, this example should be cited.

*********************************** The elementary, middle and high school in my area have armed school resource officers. The officers carry a full size S&W with extended magazines and a tazer pistol. An ar15 is kept in the trunk of their vehicles. Two of schools have two lock doors to enter like a mini Sally port. The doors have a buzzer and camera. ID shown to camera before the school buzzed the first door, then the officer looks you over before buzzing second door. The high school has guard shacks and ID checks and officers at the entrance. Officers also patrol outside with golf-carts. Seems pretty secure.

Oregon department of education prohibits teachers and staff from being armed even if the teachers and staff have concealed handgun licenses. If the school isn't posted as a "Gun Free Zone" then we citizens with a CHL can carry concealed to our little hearts content. Bend is a Leftist city much like Portland. It has become Leftist in the early 2000s (maybe a bit earlier). I am glad this father took action and ignored the sign which might as well have said "soft targets here". I am further east and north (Bend is one hour west and then two hours south of me). There was a female teacher about a decade ago who violated her teaching contract by carrying concealed due to threats from her ex-husband. She was fired, took the department of education to court and lost her case due to her signing the contract prohibiting her from exercising the same rights any other citizen who wasn't a school employee could exercise. __________________________ More blessed than I deserve. http://davesphotography7055.zenfolio.com/f238091154

The MSM article mentions that school district spent $249.7 million in 2022 to upgrade the security locks (hard to believe the amount is accurate) but also said the one school resource officer who has to cover seven different schools was elsewhere that particular day. Talk about misplace priorities. Story here: https://bendbulletin.com/2024/...ces-doors-and-locks/ ___________________________ Avoid buying ChiCom/CCP products whenever possible.

I wonder if the shooter knew about the SRO's schedule.

In the schools I’m familiar with, “resource” officers’ functions have little to do with serving as armed guards to engage active killers. They might of course be required to do that, but that’s not their primary purpose. Many schools don’t have any at all, others have part-time officers, and it’s hardly unusual for them to cover more than one school. And as for what they can do, a lot of killing can occur in the time it might take them to respond even if their reaction is immediate. In the schools I have spent time at, that could take many minutes as a minimum. Any experienced shooter can fully realize what a killer could do inside a classroom in that period. So yes, effective internal barriers, locks, and protocols are much more likely to limit casualties than one armed officer somewhere in the district. The ignorant may scoff at such measures, but their effectiveness has been demonstrated not only in exercises I’ve personally been involved in, but also in real attempts. But of course if the recommendation made in the book Terror at Beslan by John Giduck (IIRC) were followed, no one could complain about lack of armed response. That recommendation was to have dedicated teams of armed former military special operators present in each school ready to respond to threats. The recommendation opined that the practice would be cheaper and more effective than physical security. Thoughts about that idea? And an added comment about the teacher who reportedly tackled the killer and tried to take his gun after throwing her phone at him: For some years I assisted in presenting classes to school employees and others about how to respond to active killer incidents. After seeing several “run, hide, fight” type videos about the subject, including one by Homeland Security, I was struck by how squeamish and ineffective they all were about addressing the “fight” part of a response. That prompted me to start going into a lot of specific detail about what fighting should involve if it came to that. I started teaching that the most important thing in close encounters such as when a “gunman” enters a classroom or office space is usually “Go for the gun!” I.e., controlling the gun is what’s most important followed by someone else’s taking the killer to the ground where he can be assaulted (e.g., the “Q” incident in which there was some stomping on the killer’s face as he was down). A few years later I ran across a video by a former special operator of some sort who gave the same go for the gun advice. As most of us here probably know, it’s very difficult to use a firearm effectively if someone is hanging onto it, and some types can easily be disabled in the process. I do know know if controlling the gun is taught these days, but the teacher made the right choice regardless of how she knew to do that. “Most men … can seldom accept the simplest and most obvious truth if it … would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions … which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabrics of their lives.” — Leo Tolstoy

It is really hard to read or listen to the local Chicago News stations. Last night I saw a clip on YouTube from one of the Chicago area TV stations about the shooting. About 95% of the story dealt with the Teacher who threw the phone, and a barely mentioned segment about the guy who actually stopped the massacre.

Our local news reported that the female teacher threw her phone at the perp and then tackled him. Good guy came in immediately after and ended the perp. I personally enjoyed watching Tina Kotex squirm while she thanked the "community member'.

Yes, we can expect the good guy’s efforts to be downplayed or even ignored by some segments of the population; that’s a sad and sorry fact. But there is nothing wrong with giving the teacher her credit as well. Given a choice, I’d rather confront an armed killer with my own gun than with a cell phone and my bare hands. As I mentioned, the need to fight back if possible and appropriate was in my experience grossly understated, and everyone who might have to do that should understand that need. Cowering under a desk or playing dead as so often happens in these incidents has been fatal for many people. “Most men … can seldom accept the simplest and most obvious truth if it … would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions … which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabrics of their lives.” — Leo Tolstoy

It seems insane to us, but you know it’s part of their grand plan. They can’t have any guns around anywhere or they can’t get the control they want.

I stopped watching the Chicago news years ago. It's just too biased and incorrect. They are truly disgusting, even worse in several ways than the national news media.

All the schools in my county have a full-time Sheriff’s Deputy assigned as an RSO and have done so since the Sandy Hook shooting. I’m grateful for the armed citizen in this situation and the teacher who chose to fight like her life depended on it, which it did. _________________________ "An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile - hoping it will eat him last” - Winston Churchil

Bend La Pine school district utilizes active Bend police officers. These same officers also preform other duties within the department (part time SRO's). Typically they are assigned multiple schools as part of their SRO duties. The schools that get the most time are the high schools. Some of their time is facilitating lock down drills at each school done multiple times each year. That school has a open exterior lobby and one has to buzzed in to gain access to the school. Thank goodness that father saw what was happening and reacted to stop it. We are all still in shock and dealing with this tragedy.

You don't think the woman that tackled the shooter deserves a little credit for actually stopping the massacre?

We previously lived in Bend for nearly 20 yrs. It is a recreational paradise that in recent years, particularly during and after Covid, experienced an influx of new residents, some with different ideas on quality of life and governance. This has long been the case for regions that offer outdoor opportunities and a higher quality of life. It is not, however, Portland or Leftist as a previous poster and a few hours away resident, which I presume puts him near the Gorge, another set of mid Columbia communities that have also experienced similar growths. My point being, what the hell is it with a small subset of outsiders labeling a community suffering from a horrific event that somehow implies their political system is at fault. This shit happens everywhere nowadays. Yes, Kotek is a nut job, and hopefully loses to her GOP opponent. Portland has been mismanaged for years, but it ain't Bend, So knock off that shit.

The non-aggressive response somehow became normalized throughout our culture. 9-11 was due to it being the mandated procedure by flight crew. In the school yard kids are punished for striking back at a bully. Women are told not to fight a rapist. Duty to retreat is codified in some state laws. How this came to be idk. Somewhere along the line western culture made a large change, which arguably greatly reduced security under a veneer of genteelness.
