On a serious note, I’d expect this to work about like keyless entry on a vehicle. With my key in my pocket I can open my locked VW door damn near every time. 2014 Touareg. My wife has a 2023 Audi Q5 and when I take it, I average about three tries to get the door open.

AND, even though my Touareg works damn near every time, if I have the key in my pocket and you walk up with me, you can open the locked door. RFID is proximity based.

While I wouldn’t want this technology on a defensive weapon, I can see it working to make a stolen gun inactive. I can’t see it working in a close quarters situation.

a RFID ring worn on the officer's shooting hand with a range of a few inches

If Gemini AI is accurate - a prisoner can incapacitate a guard, remove the RFID ring, put the ring on their own shooting hand, and keep the gun operable. Prisoners with nothing better to do 24 hours a day will learn that work around real damn quick.

Merely an anecdote. This article just reminded me of an incident here in my hometown years ago.
We had a female deputy that did prisoner transports.
Anyway. This one kid got her pistol away from her and shot her in the head in the basement of the court house. He then stole the van but they caught him across the line in Arkansas or something.
I don’t think a smart gun would’ve helped her.
But I believe it was the last time they put a single deputy on prisoner transport. They pair up now.

So what I'm understanding here is the ring is simply another layer of security. As all.of that can happen without a smartgun.
