A sheriff’s office in Texas is now using RFID-based user-authenticated firearms, from Free State Firearms, for prisoner transfer and transport operations.

The Real County Sheriff’s Office (Texas) has deployed Free State Firearms’ RFID-based user-authenticated firearms for prisoner transfer and transport operations. The deployment marks a historic milestone, the first known operational use of user-authenticated firearm technology by a U.S. law enforcement agency.

“This is a landmark moment for firearm safety technology,” said Tom Holland, president of Free State Firearms. “When a law enforcement agency trusts our firearm for one of their most demanding operational environments, prisoner transport, it speaks volumes about the reliability and real-world performance of our platform. We’re proud to be part of the Real County Sheriff’s Office’s commitment to officer safety and responsible use of force.”

How the Technology Works

Free State Firearms said its RFID-based authentication technology ensures that a firearm can only be operated by its authorized user.

By pairing the firearm with an RFID credential carried by the authorized officer, the system delivers a seamless, fast, and reliable access control solution that requires no additional steps from the operator under normal conditions.

Free State Firearms said the technology is engineered to meet the speed, reliability, and durability standards demanded by professional law enforcement users.

Weapon Retention & Officer Safety

Free State Firearms pointed out that a critical risk factor is officer retention of weapons. Should a subject attempt to seize an officer’s firearm during a transport operation, RFID authentication renders the weapon inoperable in unauthorized hands, the company explained.

“Weapon retention during prisoner transport is one of the most serious safety considerations my deputies face,” said Sheriff Nathan Johnson, of the Real County Sheriff’s Office. “Free State Firearms’ user-authenticated technology gave us a solution that directly addresses that risk. After thorough testing, we were confident it was ready for duty use — and it has performed exactly as advertised. The Real County Sheriff’s Office conducted a thorough evaluation and qualification process before approving the firearm for operational duty use.

Plus, his department has a whopping 3 sworn LEOs in it... I'm assuming that number includes the Sheriff himself.

Oh, and his law enforcement experience prior to becoming Sheriff in 2017 consists of 3 years as a "Residential Deputy" (which apparently is a sheriff's deputy who is assigned solely to police a single small town rather than the entire county, kinda akin to a Town Marshal I guess) in Camp Wood, a town of ~500 people.

Apparently your experience with Colt 45 Malt Liquor is limited.

I spent a lot of my youth in that county, which is pronounced “Ree-all” for those of you who aren’t aware.

Knowing it was a quiet good-ol’-boys area back in the day, I’d never have imagined they would thrust themselves onto the national scene with a story like this . It should have been right out of any blue state or city - take your pick.

Also, it is such a rural area with such a small agency, the story is really a non-story in the scheme of things. The amount of officers and firearms is insignificant in a cot of over 340,000,000 people.

Also, If anyone wants a beautiful Texas Hill Country drive, which crisscrosses the beautiful, clear and cold Frio River, I’d recommend this area. Yep, that’s the river George Strait “learned to swim…”. Great times hunting, swimming, and exploring the area as a young-in!

I'd quit that shit so fucking fast.
