What are the differences between the "Version S" and CB-1?

No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

Per a quick Wiki search:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_CB400SF

quote:

1992:[2] The CB400 Super Four introduced the updated CB-1 engine, tilted backwards to obtain a more erect cylinder bank. Carburetors changed from down-draft to side-draft type, but still of a constant velocity design. A more conventional chain drive system replaced the gear cam drive system, setting the red-line at 12,500 rpm. Wider gear ratios defined the versatility of Honda's intention for the bike.

1996:[5] New front brake discs with reduced tendency to warp, and opposed four-piston calipers for improved initial response.
A special edition Super Four version S model was available with Brembo brakes and Showa suspension.

1997:[6] Updates to the carburetor air funnels, the internal muffler structure, and the Nissin brakes. Version S model also received electronically controlled ignition (PGM-IG). Weight increased by 1 kg (2.2 lb).

I went back and forth on this one quite a bit. It seems like a no brainer but I already have a lot of bikes and electrical gremlins on my Buell thanks to the moronic previous owners and the farkles they added to the bike cost me more than I expected. Truth be told electrical gremlins are sadly a somewhat common issue for those early Buell bikes but all of that mess seems to be resolved now. Cool

It is about time for a new challenge/addition. I don’t expect any issues at all from this Honda. (Famous last words but hopefully true) My CB-1 had v-reg issues but was otherwise stupid reliable for such an old bike. It is also one of the most fun motorcycles in existence. The chance to own a more modern variant of my beloved CB-1 is too good to refuse.

In the end I realized this is an opportunity that will mostly likely not come up again, well at least not anytime soon.

After doing a bit of digging it looks like parts support is a non issue on this Moto thanks to the internet and a production run lasting two decades.

To answer your question HRK you will see pics of it in my driveway sometime next month as I won’t be back in Norfolk VA until then.. Cool

I’ve almost amassed enough bikes to start a YouTube channel promoting the joy of the small mill thrill. Wink

That's a fun mix
I missed out on a couple BMW projects years ago, distance was a big factor.

This bike is fricking cool.

It starts first try every time. Idles like a dream and revs to the moon. The gearbox also feels great with 1 down and 5 up it’s pound for pound almost the same weight as my Buell X1 Lightning but has 1/3 the displacement, it’s 399cc inline four verses the Buell’s 1203cc V twin. But the tiny Honda feels close to the Buell because of its superb level of refinement. The Buell feels crude and clumsy and hard hitting where the Honda feels more agile and honestly not a lot slower for being down about 800cc from the Buell while being up two pistons on the American bike.

This bike ABSOLUTELY LIVED UP to very high expectations. This thing is stupid fun!!!

It’s everything I love about my 1989 CB-1 but refined and improved. Shifting? Better! Power? Better ! Braking? WAY better! As far as smiles per miles go this little JDM unicorn does not disappoint. No it’s not as fast as a 600-1000 (obviously) but it makes power and allows you to redline its small motor and provides a hell of a fun ride without pissing off the neighborhood and local law enforcement.
