My friend in Norfolk Virginia contacted me recently to inquire about my interest in purchasing a 1998 CB400 Super Four Version S. This is a motorcycle that was never imported to the USA. Like me my friend LOVES small displacement high revving motorcycles and acquired this bike recently in a trade. It’s plated and ready to go.

This bike is a sporty entry level bike everywhere but the USA, where it was sadly never offered. This is a four cylinder UJM (Universal Japanese Motorcycle) that was in production for nearly two decades and is quite close in HP & torque to the 1970’s CB750. I own its predecessor thanks to a fellow Sigforum member (Honda CB-1/CB400F) as well as its competition, an early 90’s Suzuki Bandit 400 four cylinder screamer.

I like the idea of having three super rare 400cc four cylinders and will probably not get another shot at owning a plated JDM unicorn like this anytime soon. The price seems quite fair too at $2k. A Honda Grom would cost more and probably not be nearly as fun.

Should I add it to the Moto collection?

Hell Yes! Bikes are your thing and you are an expert. High condition and true scarcity makes this a winner.

I really want a MC22, but they've really gone up the past few years.

You have sufficiently justified the purchase.
Buy away.

4 Cylinder? Should probably produce quite a bit of power. At 2K, I would jump!

DO NOT PASS IT UP. I had a 76 400 ss and I am looking for another. That is a sweet find.

I think you've already decided to buy the bike so my advice is to buy the bike especially for 2 grand. If you were hoping someone would convince you not to buy the bike you're on the wrong forum :-)

Seems like a bike in good shape. I would have a leak down test done on the cylinders before purchase. After rebuilding a 2000 VTR 996 Superhawk powerplant I would check on availability of rings, pistons, bearings, gasket sets, etc. They can be very hard to find for older bikes. Shifting forks for the transmission are a bitch too if the tranny is sloppy. If it passes the leak down and it's shifting OK go for it.

Every motorcyclist should know the simple equation for how many bikes to own.
X+1
X=however many motorcycles you currently own.
