P220 Smudge, if you can't lay your life on the line for your wife who then?
Just kidding.

You shouldn't have any issues unless the reunion is in a gang area, which I doubt. We've gone out there several times to visit our son, although he now lives in Escondido we drive down to San Diego and visit the sites.

Yes, I think you are over reacting and yes Laguna Beach is beautiful.

Besides, do you really think you'll be able to enjoy you 15th anniversary if you wife is pissed at you?

Laguna beach is 2 hours south of LA. SanDiego is 2 hours south of Laguna beach.

I used to vacation all the time just north of Laguna beach in Newport Beach which is a red area if that’s what you’re getting at. Laguna beach is a beautiful area so I’m with your wife on this one in that you’re way over reacting.

I’m from the Midwest in case you think I’m a biased Californian.

You can drive while having a firearm in your car in CA, but there are stipulations. With a handgun, it must be locked in a container or in a trunk, unloaded. No glove box or center console. You can travel with a long gun, does not need to be locked up in a container, but needs to be unloaded as well, and for any magazine fed guns, nothing more than ten round mags. And no "assault weapon" rifles or pistols. Mags and ammo can be in the same container or trunk as the guns. And depending on hotel, you certainly can take them into your room. Now concealed carry- that is something that you need to figure out on your own.

Over react if you want to .Either you got balls or you don't . Other than a couple of nieces and nephews , I wouldn't walk across the street to attend a reunion on my wife's side .

I was in Laguna on Sat. Orange County is not LA County. Laguna will not be a problem for your safety. You have more to fear from your wife from saying no.

Go, it's a quaint little town (used to be little) and enjoyable. Just take a good knife with you. (Not that you'll need it)

Last time I went to San Diego over to Fountain Valley (stayed at Huntington Beach) was for one of Daves get togethers a couple years ago.
It might of changed, but I doubt it, no problems safety wise.
One thing you can count on, the traffic sucks in CA.
Wouldn't stop me from going again though.

Figure out roughly what it would cost to go to Commiefornia and spend at least that making your wife happy for your anniversary. Extend an invite for family to come out and visit anytime but that weekend.

Done and done.

If it's just me, I don't give a fuck. I drove from New York to Phoenix in October unarmed except for a pocket knife. My time is going to be short already anyway, so I've developed a fairly fatalistic attitudes on a lot of things. When it comes to my wife and son, it's another matter.

I suggested that and got met with "I don't see why this is an either/or proposition. We can do both." Roll Eyes

Since you asked…

Buck up and go. Life (and wives) is/are about compromises and probabilities. I used to think like you, it led to me getting divorced.

Compromise: At the end of the day, it will make her happy, which is part of being a good husband.

Probability: You’re not going need your gun in California. Hell you won’t need your gun the whole trip. We all carry ‘just in case’, but realistically how many ‘just in case’ moments have we ever really had?

Just tell her you’ve reconsidered, you’re going to go and make it a great time for her. She’ll appreciate it more than you think.

…since you asked.

Didn't you say you needed to buy new luggage for the trip to her family reunion?

Also make sure the car is serviced and buy new tires if they look at all questionable.

I also vote for "go and enjoy it." If you insist on having a weapon, follow the above information and you'll be fine. Those are some pretty safe areas. If you travel inland any to get gas or groceries, be prepared for a few nut jobs at the local Ralph's or Trader Joe's.

In the end, you'll like it and make your wife happy.

I have taken a number of road trips from Texas to CA and I've ALWAYS taken guns with me. And ammo. IMO, driving on the road, I'm gonna be armed. And in CA, I WILL have access to a firearm, that is mandatory. And "realistically", all it takes is one event, one incident.

To split hairs a little bit: It must be unloaded and locked in a container or the trunk and a locking center console or locking glovebox doesn’t count. It could legally be in a lockbox (think nanovault or similar) in either of those locations. Even if you lock in the trunk, if you’re worried about legalities, you’re gonna need a lockbox to carry it into the hotel room.

In the hotel room (or house you’re staying in) it can be gassed up on your bedside table or carried on your person. You’re legally allowed to be armed in your residence, even if it is a temporary residence, such as an overnight in a hotel room..

My sister lived in and around Laguna Beach and we visited a couple of times. My impression was that it was a “nice” area, albeit expensive. I would not be concerned about going there. The folks seemed nice enough, though my impression was of a bunch of sheep more concerned about where they were next going to spend money to entertain themselves than anything else. Nobody seemed concerned about anything or aware of much going on around them. I guess that means it’s a relatively safe place, or at least had been up through my last visit to the area. If one had to go unarmed somewhere in CA, Laguna Beach would probably be one of the better places to do so.

That said, though my wife really enjoyed her trip to NYC with my sister in law (my brother’s wife), she fully understands that it will be a cold day in hell before I ever go to NY.

Part of being married is compromise. The fact that I am still a CA resident is one such compromise. Pick your battles and good luck whatever you decide.

Yeah, shes right, you're wrong, after 15 years you should know this Big Grin

Get a Nanovault, put it in the car and lock it up when in CA so you have one while you travel through AZ.

Other than some kind of in transit issues on the interstate Laguna Beach isn't 3rd world...
