Paying college tuition would be a good idea for these management folks. Several courses in common sense would be mandatory. A floor cleaning robot bumped into me rather hard. It was not in my field of vision and easily could have caused a fall.

I understand the cost savings, but robots should be working nights when no one is in the store. I can see the TV ads now on late night TV " 1800 robot if you were frightened or injured by a robot."

Menards (big box home improvement store) has floor robots too that are constantly running. Part of the whole 'increased cleaning due to covid' These things constantly beep while driving around. I don't know how the employees can stand hearing that beeping all day long - it can be heard at the opposite side of the store.

These stop if they get within 10' of a person and just sit there beeping and the light flashing until you move on.

These robots should be paid a living wage and then of course they then need to pay their income and other tax.

We are getting fewer and fewer people earning an income and thus paying taxes and then consuming more and more $$$ from the government.

The wheels will come off the cart.

I'd like to see aisle helper robots with knowledge of the store layout, maybe with specialized AI knowledge of the aisle.

Maybe then I could find a kunutzinvalve handle without having to find an employee that knows where it is.....

TMK, this is nothing more than “Aglifter’s Rule of Labor,” but I swear the quality of the labor force degrades at a rate slightly faster than it’s ability to be automated…

In my ideal world, I would handle a handful of people, to deal with problem solving/helping customers, as needed/desired, and all other tasks would be automated.

I keep trying to find someone to make a scooping robot for me, but can’t seem to find a company to take it on. (ABB made one for a trade show, but won’t sell me one.

I think a “Neo Big Box” which is fully automated, and has all manner of inventory, including stuff specialists might want to stick with closed stock numbers, is where we are heading.

There’s just “The Store,” from which everything gets picked up. Specialists might get called to help place orders/pay to store speciality products in it, but there are no longer hardware stores/HVAC supplies/Plumbing supplies, etc.

At least in my area, the stores are busier at night with all the forklift traffic from loading/unloading the shelves and bulk orders.

Why surprises me (having working in a robot-transport warehouse in the past) is that the robot didn't have a better collision avoidance system. The ones we used (early 2000's) had oversized soft bumpers and light bar sensors that would cause them to e-stop before and purposeful contact was made.

I would like to see more stores, especially stores like Home Depot or Lowe's, with something like the Publix app.

I can specify which Publix location I'm in, and the product I'm looking for. The app will then tell me that the item is on aisle 7.

After marching up and down aisle 7 a few times, I can then go to the customer service counter and say something like, "it's probably right in front of me, but I just don't see it," after which an employee will escort me to aisle 12 and show me where the product is.

Ummm… Home Depot and Lowe’s websites (and apps) both do this already.

Their online inventory system sucks, so they may not have any, but it will at least tell you where they should be, by aisle and bay.

I wouldn't think this either hasn't already been done, or will happen shortly.

One of our local grocery store chains has a robot that scans the aisles for inventory. It has to know what is what and where it is because it's counting it by some sort of image scanning as it goes down the aisles.

I have long said this, but in a different way. Due to those who insist on lower prices through online retailers due to their lower overhead, it's driving the locals out of business. Won't the world be a better place when your two options for everything are Amazon and Walmart?
