Cub Scouts, I was I think 9 or 10. The pack meeting had Kermit Alexander of the 49ers as a guest. My main memory is him showing some film of him intercepting a pass, and running it the wrong way into his own end zone. Smile

He was a nice guy.

Neil Armstrong in about 1972. I was in fourth grade, went to school with his son. Pappy Boyington, about 1978, at an EEA fly in at OshKosh.

Lance Armstrong, although he was much less known at the time. I was on a bike ride with a racer friend of mine and Lance came along to ask my friend advice about an offer he had to join the Motorola racing team. On another occasion (with my same friend) Lance sent beers over to our table at a restaurant he'd shown up at. Just beer -- nothing performance enhancing.

Me, too. He autographed my copy of his book, which I bought some years earlier and took to Oshkosh in anticipation of meeting him.

I remember doing that. We would also ride our bikes from Pimmit hills to Tyson's Corner Mall back when you could. I met several Redskins players in and around Falls Church (my birthplace), Herndon, even Nokesville! I met John Riggins in a gun store in Warrenton.

Some of my earliest ones were members of the 79-81 Dodgers. We'd always to to STL when they were in town. Had pics taken with Lasorda, Garvey, Cey, etc. Even got Fernando to sign a baseball his rookie season (still have it). Danny Ozark was shocked I wanted his autograph. Walked down the street with Burt Hooten as he was running late...had a nice chat with him as a 12 year old.

Probably my favorite was my HS senior year - I was hired to photograph Jeff Pilson (bass player for Dokken) at the Iowa Jam for a Texas publication. Waiting offstage for them to go on after Ozzy, I looked up and there was Uncle Ted...me and the Nuge talked for about 20 minutes about life in Iowa, hunting and music. He was so polite and cool to a talk with.

It was probably Ken Harrelson. My sister babysat his kids and he'd come to our house to pick her up.

If not him, about the same time, Wolfman Jack. He DJ'd a few dances at our high school.

I've heard he is relatively short - what would you guess his height to be?

I've never met anyone famous. My wife has though. Hugh Jackman stayed at the hotel she was working front desk at. He walked right up and asked her a few questions. She didn't have a clue who it was until later when a coworker said something haha bless her..Said he was polite and very short. I was jealous. Always been a big Wolverine fan.

Buffalo Bob, and of course, Howdy Doody and Clarabell the Clown. I was on the show somewhere around '49 or '50.

What I didn't realize until he died was the fact that Clarabell, at the time, was Bob Keeshan who later on became Captain Kangaroo.

Jack Lord, pre Hawaii 5-0, early 60's at the Four States Fair & Rodeo in Texarkana. His TV persona and show was Stoney Burke as a rodeo cowboy. Going through stuff at my Dad's house last year, we still have the autographed photo......

Richard Petty. Stood in line for about an hour to meet him, shake hands, get an autograph, and talk about Goody's headache powders (I had a cold and could have used one) at an auto show. Class act.

Willie Stargell was the first MLB autograph I ever got. Super nice guy. Sat next to ML Carr (Boston Celtics) on a flight to Boston, but didn't know who he was. He thought that was funny and we bought each other a round of drinks Big Grin

I looked it up on the internet, which says 5'10". But standing shoulder to shoulder at the motocross, he isn't more than 5'7".

I met Mickey Mantle. He was drunk, he walked out a side door of an event, took a piss with the door propped open. Walked back, combed his hair with a fork after he sat down. I was around 10 yrs old, and even I at the time was like WTF.

What an interesting thread. I'd never given something like this much thought.

For me it would be...
Never really met him but I had a second or third cousin who was married to Gene Autrey back in the late 50's. They were leaving a family gathering after a funeral as we arrived.

Audie Murphy at a parade in McKinney, Tx when I was a kid. VP Lyndon Johnson and Murphy were part of the parade. My mother knew the Texas Ranger Captain that was his escort and we got to meet him for a few minutes. Seemed like a really nice guy, but he also seemed to be real uncomfortable around others.

Met Charlie Waters, Drew Pearson, Randy White and Too Tall Jones of the Dallas Cowboys. I used to stop by a Tom Thumb with a kinda lunch bar that served sandwiches and such. The old practice field was across the road.

Had a brief conversation with Sam Donaldson at a Hilton hotel where President Regean was about to speak.

I met Sterling Moss at the Detroit Grand Prix in 1984. A friend and coworker, jumped the barrier while the SCCA race was getting staged up and stuck his head in Paul Newman's car, said smile and took Newman's picture. At the same race we were standing between the river and the raceway after the opening crash of the F1 event when Niki Lauda hopped the barrier and went out to sit by the river until they were ready to restart.

Last one I remember was about 5 years ago when one of my grandsons was playing little league baseball. Mark Maclamore of the Texas Rangers was at their practice.

While my military unit was pulling perimeter security at the World Trade Center shortly after 9/11 ( they were pulling lots of casualties out of the pit and this was early enough they were still hoping to find some living survivors) Lee greenwood ( did not realize it was him until later) jumped on top of a destroyed police car and sang proud to be an American. After he finished singing we made our way into a small diner that was serving meals to police fire and military personnel, and lunch was served by Harrison Ford.
