My nephrologist has recommended a biopsy. He suspects I have a genetic condition that relates to hearing loss and kidney function. Knowing wouldn't significantly affect my treatment plan, but I'm the oldest of 5 siblings and have a shit ton on nieces and nephews. Foreknowledge could help them delay symptoms.

At any rate, I've never had much in the way of medical procedures, so I'd like to know what to expect. I can get the clinical data from the web, but personal insights are much more valuable to me.

Thanks!

Had a kidney biopsy 5-6 years ago. They wheel you in, knock you out and wakeup when it's over. No pain, no memory of anything that happened, didnt't even need a bandaid. It was like it never happened. I was less tired after that than my colonoscopy.

Thanks, that's a relief. I shouldn't be such a wuss, I'm sure much worse is coming down the road.

Fredward, I had one last September. You are put under. They go up through your pecker and take a sample. You wake up, recovery is quick. Pecker a little sore for a while. In and out in a few hours.

Well, it's no wonder you didn't need a Band-Aid!

Wait WHUT? They told me they stuck me from the back side? But that WOULD explain the no band-aid thing. Now I feel violated.

In my experience: I had local - I was awake. I remember because they kept asking if I had any pain and would tell I was going to feel some pressure.

The being said, the procedure was painless albeit a bit scary after seeing the needle gauge they were going to use.

At the time, I had very strong back muscles. I think that's the reason I had a back ache for a few days afterwards.

Even though it was local and I wasn't put under, I had to stay overnight in the hospital. They just wanted to make sure they didn't nick an artery or something and had internal bleeding. It was fine.

I didn't know they could do a kidney biopsy via the penis / urethra. They go down the urethra, through the bladder and then to the kidney? Where in the kidney does it end up?

They used ultrasound imaging for mine and I think they basically tried to get the middle of the kidney.
