Eschew Obfuscation |
I must have caught a lousy agent. I had the AmEx platinum card and used it to make a purchase I had an issue with. First, I was kept on hold for 45 minutes. Then, when I finally got a hold of an agent, she couldn’t have been less helpful. I finally had enough and hung up on her. I closed my account a couple of days later. _____________________________________________________________________ “One of the common failings among honorable people is a failure to appreciate how thoroughly dishonorable some other people can be, and how dangerous it is to trust them.” – Thomas Sowell

I rotate credit cards on a somewhat regular basis to keep points active and filled. One of the cards is an Amex. A few years ago I paid off the balance on it and switched to another card. Immediately after paying the balance I got hit with a small interest charge of like $12. I must have made the payment a day too late to avoid interest on a purchase. Anyway this was before I had autopay set up on every card to avoid a missed payment, and I didn't realize there was a balance until I got a credit score alert that I had dropped 20 points due to a 60+ day missed payment. For about a year I went off and on with calling Amex trying to get the charge and the hit reversed due to it being a result of an interest charge which hadn't been applied until the card was paid off, and was paid off immediately upon noticing. All of the overseas customer service reps were far from helpful. I had given up for a while when I decided to try again, but with a different approach. I was able to find the email for the CEO and sent him an email basically stating "I know you likely won't see this, and if you do you're likely busy so I'll keep it brief" and gave a short version of the above story. This was on a Saturday and a couple hours later I get an email back "I'll have someone in my office look into this on Monday - Steve" Monday morning just past 9am I get a call from the executive department at Amex advising that since the missed payment was only due to a charge they put on, they could reverse it, and they did. Can't beat that.
