Shit don't mean shit |
I am not a big fan of EV's, but I think they certainly have their place, especially considering if: A. Someone works from home, or has a "company car", like the OP. B. They are a 2 car household, and one of them is a gasser/diesel. I was 100% in the no way camp, but I've bee thinking about it more and more. Just for arguments sake, this is my situation. My wife and I are both white collar workers who work from home. We rarely do overnight trips. They only place we ever went where we didn't fly was South Dakota, to see wife's grandparents. They both died in the last few years, so no reason to go there any more. Plus, when we went to the last 2 funerals, we flew. It's kind of expensive to fly into S. Dakota, but we got tired of the 8 hour drive each direction. We are a 2 SUV family. I have a 2010 Tahoe and my wife has a 99 4Runner. In this situation, if you have 2 vehicles, an EV would probably make sense for one of them. If you are a 1 vehicle household and did long trips, probably not.

You should learn more about charging before you go on this journey. It sounds like you would be a fairly light user so it might be very viable for you, but it sounds like your current expectations may exceed reality for charging it. The typical 120V plug you will find at your house or a friends house is going to be limited to 1500 watts. It will be considerably less if you have to run an extension cord to the vehicle. The standard 98,000 Watt/Hr battery charged at 1500 Watts would take a minimum of 65 hours from zero to a full charge, and probably considerably longer due to inefficiency and charging algorithms. A 220 outlet would cut that in half, and there are much better options available at various levels of additional expense. I'm not trying to dissuade, but you are going to need to have a plan for charging it before you consider it further. It's not like your cell phone, the batteries and energy needs are so huge that just plugging it into the wall wherever you end up isn't going to give you acceptable results. Not to mention that while friends/family might not mind you charging your phone, charging your vehicle at a their house will have a noticeable impact on their electricity bill and might not be welcome. "The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy." "I did," said Ford, "it is." "So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?" "It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want." "You mean they actually vote for the lizards." "Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course." "But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?" "Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Adding a 220V outlet to the general vicinity of a main panel is no big deal. If your main panel is in, or near your garage, it's super simple to do. Get home from work at 7:00 PM, charge to 6:00 AM the next morning you should be good to go. you don't even have to do it daily.

I just picked my oldest up from school and says “Hey dad, does Ford make an electric pickup?” I ask why and he proceeds to tell me there was one in the student pickup line before I got there. He said it looked normal, but he could hear the electric whine. He said the Rivian is cooler because it has four motors, one on each wheel, which means you can tank steer it. He even showed me a video of it. Considering my current truck’s 60ft turning radius, bring on the tank steering!

I like the Rivian as well but too small and way too much money for this guy. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. I will be your brother, and I'll hold your hand. You should know I'll be there for you!

I believe the Rivian tank turn is limited to off-road use. Needs the slip of non-pavement, from what I've read. Rician also will have a dual motor that's a bit cheaper. The quad motor is their top trim/model. The Enemy's gate is down.

I'm watching and interested. I could see converting my current fleet over to the Lightning F150 and a new Bronco. Both models need some ironing out still. Which'll likely be perfect for 3-4 years from now. I believe this lightning to be very promising. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The trouble with our Liberal friends...is not that they're ignorant, it's just that they know so much that isn't so." That wouldn’t surprise me it sounds like it would be rough on the drivetrain on concrete. The Chevy EV Silverado or whatever they call it has 4 wheel steering and turns incredibly sharp. If anyone is looking for an EV pickup right now you’re going to get bent over on pricing not only because of the current car market but additionally +$5.00 a gallon gasoline. There are dealers advertising $40+ over sticker on the Lightning and Chevy. Never looked at the Rivian.

My only concern with An EV is that the battery WILL die, it’a not a IF it’s a WILL. You have two major issues at play here. 1-There will be a substantial cost to replace. My guess on the order of 12k-20K. 2-Will they actually replace the battery. Chevy has already said they are not doing so with the Bolt, I believe. So while with IC at worst you have a beat up old truck that still is able to do beat up old truck things. With an EV you potentially have a $40K paper weight. I WANT to like and embrace EV’s but I think there is too much to bite you in the ass at this point. Now hybrid type power trains I could totally get on board with. "Guns are tools. That is one off the realistic concerns. Most of them do have very high mileage warranties now. Really that’s the only thing I would be concerned with at all with EV’s other than possible fire and I just read an article that showed data that ICE vehicles catch on fire at a much higher rate. Still doesn’t squash my fear of it though.

State of Louisiana is in the process of passing legislation concerning road taxes owed by the owner/drivers of EV/and hybrid vehicles to make up for the $.20cts per gallon gas tax..... proposed $110 per EV vehicle and $60 per Hybrid vehicles.... Now here is the kicker as it stands right now this will be a volunteer tax with no real way of collecting .. But am sure that is subject to change. ....... drill sgt.

The Pro model at $40k is a bare bones model. No bedliner. Thick vinyl seating (think rental truck seats). And only one motor so it's FWD or RWD only. You can add a second motor to achieve 4wd but now you are really adding $$$ to the price.

The lower (to some folks) options are exactly what I am looking for. I would add neoprene seat covers as I do with most of my trucks and have it bed lined by my guy for $250 cheaper than Ford wants and comes with a life time warranty. But the thing comes very well equipped standard considering. Only thing it does not have is a full roll down window option like the Tundras do. Has wireless CarPlay with a 12” screen, back up camera, reverse sensing alerts, nice Michelin tires, forward collision alert, blind spot monitoring and cross traffic alerts. The Pro comes standard with the dual motor (4wd) it is not an upgrade. The extended range battery is the upgrade. As for the available options in the build the only thing I upgraded was the onboard power for the 2.4 kW to the 9.6 kW Pro Onboard power which is a $1,070 option. https://shop.ford.com/configur...E..PYZ...99L.772.%5D And the best part about the whole thing NOT A LICK OF CRAPPY CHROME TO BE FOUND!!! ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. Comments from a really old guy: 40 grand should come with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, attached garage, and a half-acre in a decent neighborhood. My first house was $9300, no money down VA loan, $88 per month PITI. My first brand new house, from the builder, was $17.700, no money down VA loan, $182 per month PITI. Scared the hell out of me because my take-home pay was $192 every two weeks and the wife and two kids really liked to eat every day. Back to the new truck: Can I get it with towing package so I can pull a trailer with a generator and a large fuel tank, just in case I need to top off the battery here and there? That might work. To Do What is Right and Just |
It's one of those cars where I'd certainly give it a few years before buying if I was seriously considering it. EV's do nothing for me personally, but I'd hold on buying any new model no matter what brand. I think hybrids will eventually become more the norm, but for that to happen the battery packs need to drop in price or have a crazy long warranty that transfers. Why buy a used hybrid with 40k miles when you're almost half way there to replacing the battery pack for thousands. As for all electric, may suit some that have two vehicles or don't commute much. For me, too many road trips, too many remote places off roading, and paying 40 to 80k for an extra vehicle to save gas money is beyond dumb.

I’m at 8 years DD’ing an EV. I plug it in a few times a week. I don’t drive high miles on my dd. It’s to get to work, go to the gym, get groceries, basically any “errand” you can think of. I have gas vehicles for sporting purposes. The EV in 8 years has needed tire rotations, new 12V battery a couple of times (powers the ac, etc), brake fluid swap at year 5 or 6, and I just had to get the Freon charged for the AC. That’s it. I have 35 panels on the house so fueling it has been relatively nil. Plug it in before you go to bed and other than than that, it just runs, and runs. If the Ford has regenerative braking you won’t even need to worry about pads and rotors. I just had mine inspected and the tech told me to quit asking about the brakes as these don’t need the service like an ICE car. But I leased mine for $200 a month then bought it from them at lease end for nothing. It became an offer I could not refuse. I wouldn’t want to dick with an EV for long range travel, IE road trip covering hundreds and hundreds of miles. But if it’s going to be a local machine, your truck, with the odd 100 mile drive here and there, it’ll do it all day. Install a L2 charger at home and it’s no big deal. What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

This Lightning is the only EV I would consider at this point. I like it because it looks like a regular truck. Tesla cyber truck looks ridiculous stupid. I plan to keep my current truck for another 3 years to see how all these shortages play out. By then I hope Ford figures a way price a mid level EV. No way am I paying 80k+ for a vehicle. 99% of the time the EV would suit just fine. Once a year when we drive 600 miles to the beach is where I’m not a fan of an EV
