Rosenstein is not Assistant U.S. Attorney General, as stated, but Deputy Attorney General. Big difference. He was U.S. Attorney for Maryland, nominated to the circuit court bench by W, which was blocked by both Democrat Maryland senators, and was on the Special Prosecutor staff of Ken Starr, among other things. Lawyers move agencies all the time. Running interference means appearing in court and having a judge decide how broad a FOIA request is allowed.
