Thinking of taking a May trip to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Looking for he good, bad, etc. Mainly going for the hiking in the Ouachita National Forest.

I was there in 2008 and took a few pictures. It is very beautiful in that area.

Hot Springs has a seedy, cheesy feel to it for me. Yes there are some cool places, but right now the horse races have started and that really brings in the seedy characters. I would not consider it a tourist destination. Eureka Springs may be more enjoyable for you.

All I know about Hot Springs came from a Stephen Hunter book but if it was anything like that book Hot Springs was a bad ass town back in Earl Swagger's day.

I would definitely recommend reading that book before visiting.
Would also read anything you can find about Bill Clinton’s youth.

Yep. Unless you have a specific reason for Hot Springs and the Ouachita National Forest, I'd also recommend Eureka Springs and the Buffalo National River/Ozark National Forest instead.

The hiking's better around the Buffalo/Ozark anyway. Look at the trails for The Glory Hole, Hemmed in Hollow Falls, and Hawksbill Crag.

Might consider spending a day and a night at Mount Magazine too, on the way in or the way out. There's a nice lodge on top, and a number of hiking trails around Mt. Magazine State Park.

If you're going to Hot Springs for the Oaklawn casino or the Horse races (racing FRI, SAT, SUN through the first weekend in May) then have fun. Otherwise, it's not worth the drive. Lots of pretty scummy areas in Hot Springs.

Hot Springs, Arkansas

I was at a resort with my Road Bike and a Guy suggested we ride out Hwy 70 to a little Bar called the State Line Bar and Grill - The story goes that it is on the border and half is restricted to open drinking and the other is not - Parking lot is paved with bottle caps. It is a piece of history and should not be missed. The bathroom graffiti must be seen.
