When I have seen MLB, I have noticed that even the non-American players generally stand and face the flag with their hats off. MLB seems to have passed the word that there will be no shenanigans.

SouthSide SOX fans would be singing the Anthem & treat those Gyrenes with all respect. Probably try to buy 'em a frosty if allowed.

I don't understand how folks forget to remove hats. Just eat up being a dumbass I guess.

That article tells very little of the situation.

Not only is the photo facing the outfield, most of the players are in the dugout. Not sure if they've been updated but recall, Wrigley's dugouts are the smallest in baseball. There's a whole host of factors why the players (seemingly) aren't on the field...team meeting in locker room, Owner/GM wanted a word, new gear was being handed-out, who knows. This is a mountain out of a mole-hill.

If the Chicago Cubs want to do something to help their city, they should hand out condoms by the truckload in the inner city.

Maybe do covert sterilizations via Purple Drank.

Those 90 seconds are usually used for commercials. I have often complained about that (since I've sung the Anthem with a men's group there several times). At least that facility uses good judgment when selecting artists to perform the Anthem!

I think that is right about the National Anthem, but the 7th inning stretch is televised. They have someone sing it from the field, the crowd joins in, players and umpires stand with hat over heart usually.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

I've got tickets to a Nationals game next Friday. I really hope I don't see anything like that here in DC.

Has it? I'm not defending anyone, but I'd like to know a whole lot more about what happened than just this story. Baseball has made it a point to try and distance itself from the NFL nonsense (seeing what its done to that sport), so I'm not completely buying into this reported event being an NFL style protest, especially with the Cubs team. Remember the no-name A's catcher who took a knee last year? Well, he no longer plays baseball, nor is he likely to in the future. That incident was squashed almost as fast as it happened.

Didn't happen, huh? Quoth the dude with a baseball as an avatar. yep, this documented litany is a fairy-tale...
Go back and re-read my initial post. I'm not saying this did or didn't happen. I said I wanted more info than just this one media story (the source of which is a bit questionable) before I opted to crucify anyone. And yes, I'm a huge baseball fan, but that doesn't color my view of any sports team or league that would disrespect the flag, our military, and our first responders (i.e. like the NFL has).

Provide me with more info that proves the Cubs engaged in a NFL type protest of the anthem and I'll bring the rope for the hanging. Until then I'll withhold judgement.

Uh, unless you know something about Maxwell that the A’s don’t, he still plays baseball. He was only taken off the active roster because he had a weapons charge pending and that wasn’t until Last May, almost a year after he took a knee. His kneeling was never “quashed” by anyone and the MLB, the A’s front office and his team supported him kneeling. AFAIK he did so for the remainder of last season.

A lot of people downplayed his kneeling because baseball is their favorite sport. Just like when the topic of teams getting paid for pro-military spots comes up people conveniently forget that MLB teams took money too.

I’m happy more MLB players have not followed his example but there is plenty of support for what he did throughout the league. And I don’t understand why people give a pass to the MLB and its players for doing the exact same things the NFL does.

Last I'd read A's management had canned Maxwell. Maybe he got a reprieve. Personally I don't care as anything short of him being dropped down a bottomless hole is inadequate.

Don't read too much into my initial post. I'm not turning a blind eye to anything. As far as I'm aware, this Cub's incident is a first this season of anything that 'might' be seen as an anthem protest. I just want to know for sure what actually happened before I opt to condemn the Cub's, the Rickett's family, or MLB. Is that so unreasonable?

It’s not at all unreasonable. I even agreed with you in my first response to your post. This is a poorly written article that scream fake news to me. You are right to be suspicious of its authenticity.

Trust me nobody wants the MLB to shut down any sort of anthem protests as much as me. I’ve been an NFL fan for decades and since swearing off the NFL my interest in the MLB has grown. I don’t want to have to abandon my foster sport already.

The crowd stopped the anthem singer to take selfies and blocked the Marines as they were trying to get up the stairs.

“Like I’ve always talked about, everybody’s got the right to express themselves in the manner in which they feel,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “I’ve always felt that way.”

I think a lot of this confusion over the start time of the game. Last nights game ended in a rain delay and they elected to do a doubleheader this morning with an odd start time. I think more than a few players had their routine blown out because of this. Also they are in the middle of like 23 straight games and last night was called at 1230 due to rain. Every cubs game I have been to they are all out for the anthem. Headed to ATL to watch them play tomorrow. Will report back.

Suntrust is a nice park. Not the nicest I have been to but I like it. Plus it is in a nice area with all sorts of bars to hit before and after the game Smile. Enjoy your trip here!

The current 7 game homestand was deemed American Legion week, which Madden prohibited a Cubs player to be in Wrigley Field I believe 3 hours prior to first pitch.

It was mentioned numerous times on the radio broadcast AM 670 , also heard Madden talking about American Legion week on his pregame show with Ron Coomer. MG
