Of the fatalities, youngest 20, oldest 55. Of the injured, youngest 16.

13 dead instead of 15 as originally reported. Vehicle came through a knocked down section of fence late Monday night and was undetected.

This fence break highlights a critical weakness in the older fence sections. The smugglers sawed off a section of fence at the ground and drove at least 2 vehicles through. There is a camera on a tall pole that covers this area. News said that the camera rotates. Appears that there was not another camera that covered this area. If this is the case, WTF? Do the persons in charge think they are dealing with simple farmers? These smugglers are not fools. Now lives were lost.

Blaming Border Patrol for the lives lost due to smugglers' attempt to enter the country illegally? Seriously? The only way to "prevent" these kinds of incidents 100% is legalize all entries and simply open the borders to any/all immigrants. Roll Eyes

Tragic accident in more ways than one. Untill some people stop and "walk a mile in these peoples shoes" they just do not understand or care as to why they are willing go through to come to a better place than they came from. Most of these people are being preyed on by the smugglers but they still keep coming for a better life than where they came from. Return to building the wall with armed guards as well as better screening at the airports to turn around round up the ones here illegally with immedately removing them from this country those coming without legitmate reasons. But also that came with a limited stay allowed but failed to leave as they had promised to do. ......And not all of these people are coming from one country but multiple countries from around the world. ....IF we do not have immagration laws enforced then why have them. We can no longer be the police force for the world and fix other countries problems by throwing money at them and when they turn their backs on us and we keep throwing money at them.. But we all know this will not happen because of all of the new voters this will generate. ........................ drill sgt.

And just heard on the radio in San Diego - there's going to be a "memorial" for the "victims" of the crash in Chicano Park today. No mention of the fact most the dead entered our country illegally and the other "victims" were facilitating the law breakers.

Also, no mention if the people in Chicano Park will recognize the truck driver and the trauma he will surely go through knowing he killed that many people (regardless if he was at fault or not).

Who are "some people"?

If the fence breech had been detected, the vans could have been stopped immediately so they could be shoved back to their side of the border.

There's a proper way to get here and they chose not to do it.

What you are saying is absolutely 100% correct. The tragic deaths and injuries could have been avoided.

The answer is tightening the border to reduce (not possible to totally eliminate) illegal entry, and to facilitate proper immigration. Easier said than done.

I am in agreement that illegal immigration needs to be stopped. I did not blame border patrol ground officers as they probably did not design that camera coverage. But really, if the facts of the breach have been reported correctly, whoever designed camera coverage that has prolonged blind spots hasn't even seen prison breakout movies. Jeesh.

On entering legally: I saw a piece on TV the other day about the immigrants that are waiting near the border for their asylum status to be heard, per current procedure. Previous administrations allowed them to "wait" in the USA for their hearing (I know, right?). Those who followed the rules are still waiting in camps near the border a year later. Trump's merit-based immigration plan was the best any administration has offered, only to be rebuffed by Congress.

Now you guys see why we need to abolish ICE? If not for those meanies we wouldn't have 27 victims, we'd have 27 new citizens. When will this madness end?

I'm sure if I had twitter, I'd be reading the above statement somewhere.

Or, we could build a 'Big, Beautiful Wall' along the entire border w/ Mexico, which would go a VERY Long way to eliminating these kinds of incidents... Wink

the real fix is to make mexico a country that is desirable by locals to live in. that they don't feel compelled to come here for a better life. fix the corruption in mexico. help them build a thriving economy.

we cannot do that with Puerto Rico and they are American citizens. Not sure we will ever see that with Mexico. I worked a lot in Mexico in the 2000s, and there was a definite resurgence of small business and economic growth. Love the Mexican people and working down there - BUT this changed with the rise in corruption (always there but became much much worse) as the drug cartels grew. Became too much for many of the independent business owners I worked with and over time they closed the doors. For me, went from a fun growth market to one we no longer focus on or engage - sad to see.

We cannot fix a foreign country, that has been proven over and over - and not a role I want to see the US take over.

That aside, this is a human tragedy and prayers to those killed and hurt - and their families.

Mexican dude, self-styled handyman, who was working on my house has a thriving economy of his own.

The work that he did was highest quality. Problem is, most tasks were left almost finished when he disappeared with the money I paid him and has not responded to attempts to contact him. Next door neighbor has the same problem with the same guy.

I didn't say the US should fix the problem and make Mexico a thriving economy; although I would say we have a vested interest on multiple socio-political-economic fronts.

If they got their shit together, I can envision hundreds of miles of beachfront property for WFH or retirement, for example. It may be practically desirable globally instead of, for example, that shithole failure of man made islands in the middle east.

Anyway, just a thought.

We can help them with their problem. Finish the wall and lock it down really tight. Nothing will happen until the Mexicans fix the problem themselves. Not allowing easy illegal entry would go a long way to forcing Mexico to fix its own problems.
