That rug really tied the room together. |
I worked at one department that had an extremely vicious and dangerous German Shepard that almost killed every single person it bit. I’m talking dozens of staples and/or stitches and 50% of that persons blood on the ground. Every time. Legally speaking , if you are not a criminal, have done nothing wrong, and a police officer accidentally or erroneously releases a police K9 dog into your house via an unlocked front door or window, legally you could shoot the dog in most jurisdictions. In some jurisdictions you could be charged with a crime. And in many jurisdictions, your life is in serious danger if you shoot a police dog. The officers are extremely close to their dogs and many have a mentality that they WILL kill someone who shoots their dog... it’s their word vs yours ... and you have 5 bullet holes in your chest . It’s a shit sandwich for sure. Damn if you do, damn if you don’t. That dog could permanent maim or kill you. And so can the officers if you shoot their dog. ______________________________________________________ Often times a very small man can cast a very large shadow

Just my opinion as a witness, I don't think I could draw and fire from my right side with left hand while being flailed around violently. Ymmv. Tommy

Ever try to shoot an attacking dog? Not easy. And once he has latched onto you, it wont get any easier, either. In fact, you might even shoot yourself. And once you do plink the pooch, expect an incoming barrage. FWIW, I never saw a K9 released into any building without multiple announcements and one announcement was made via patrol car P.A. Somewhat related dog bite war story: I was called to a residence on an "assist the medics" call. When I entered the living room, it looked like a slaughter house and the EMS folks were working hard to stop the bleeding on a dude who looked like he fell on a chain saw face first. I moved into the kitchen and a large German Shepard came up to me. I petted him. As the dude was being stretchered out, his wife told me what happened. The dude was watching TV when the GS came by and tinkled on the TV stand. The dude started in beating the dog but the dog turned the tables on him and shredded him. I asked where was the dog that attacked him and she said you are petting him! End of Earth: 2 Miles Upper Peninsula: 4 Miles

Reminds me of a scene from The Pink Panther. “Does you dog bite?” You’re a lying dog-faced pony soldier

Prepared for the Worst, Providing the Best |
There have been quite a few former and current LEO who have chimed in on this thread, and our responses have been pretty consistent: don't fight the dog. In my case, that's information gleaned over 10 years of first-hand observation and direct instructions from handlers. I am not a handler myself. There are some here who seem to think they can fight their way out of an encounter with a K9. I guess they can try if they want...I'm not going to start an argument with anybody over it. It's their arms and legs. But if I get bit, I'm gonna try to stay as still as possible until the handler gets the dog off. I've seen both approaches employed, and the outcome of that one is always better.

Do No Harm, Do Know Harm |
We have...the scenario is essentially outside the realm of possibility where I work. We won’t send a dog into a house unless there are some crazy circumstances, and the entire neighborhood will know all about it before it happens. Maybe if you go into work and set off the alarm at 3am and leave a door unlocked and have headphones in and blaring. Maybe. Even then I’d expect the handler figures it out and stops it before it happens. Now accidental bites, I’ve seen. Wrong place, wrong time. They aren’t exactly picky. But not someone randomly in their house. Either way, if you know it’s a police dog, not fighting, letting the handler call it off, and suing the hell out of them is absolutely the best win. Any other arrangement is going to suck more. Not knowing it’s a police dog...game on. Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here. Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard. -JALLEN "All I need is a WAR ON DRUGS reference and I got myself a police thread BINGO." -jljones

Having been on more than a few dog tracks I'll say the dog is faster and stronger than you think for puppy-fu. Also round these parts it's announced before the dog gets let off leash. For the sake of hypothetical fun, sit still and let the dog bite you into a brand new custom home and/or yacht. If you are feeling classy find out the dogs name and name your yacht after him.
