"Car-mul"/"carmle".

That's definitely the norm in the South.

Well crap. I never though about it before and now here I am saying it over and over both ways.

Say it like it's spelled... with 2 a's!

Cara-mel

I shall respect you until you open your mouth, from that point on, you must earn it yourself.

I pronounce the 'a' in the middle. Just like it's spelled. Wink

if it's on popcorn 'car mul' - carmul corn

if it's in a candy bar 'kara mel' - I like mine loaded with peanuts and karamel

One is correct. The other suggests illiteracy.

I predict that there will be many suggestions and statements about the law made here, and some of them will be spectacularly wrong. - jhe888

I sound out all the syllables.

If it’s a soft chew, or something I would eat on its own, I would call it a kara mel.

If it’s a coffee drink, ice cream topping, or ingredient I have always called in car mul.

Not sure how, where, or why I call it that way.

How do you pronounce “aunt” and “vase”?

“I gave my ont a cara-mel colored vahse” or “I gave my ant a carmul colored vāse”?

Well, from now on it'll be caramel....as it's spelled. You've shamed me into it. Big Grin

Definitely car-mul for me. While I definitely see why people would pronounce it the way it's spelled, I just don't do it.

"I gave my ant a cara-mel colored vayce". Smile

And in your first instance, "vahse" should be "vahz".

I was raised to pronounce it 'carmul' but have since been pronouncing it caramel. Although, I go back to my roots when I say 'carmulized onions'. Soooo, I'm screwed up. Mrs DF and the boys rib me for saying 'white' instead of 'wyte'. I actually pronounce the 'wh' sound but not overly so. This is a source of amusement for my family.
