Doesn't mean I have to like it, and I'll tell you what it DOES mean on my planet: That student is a poorly raised, self-centered, attention-whoring, rude little shit and I will goddamn sure treat him/her as such in all subsequent encounters. Such behavior results in absolutely zero breaks from me on any topic at any time in the future.

In other words, as far as I'm concerned, you done messed in yer messkit, son.

My sentiments exactly. I have and will fight for his right to stand or not stand, or exercise any other rights that are guaranteed by our Constitution, but that doesn't change my view that he and his parents are assholes.

These days those kind of teachers would be buried in a dark dungeon someplace. Needless to say, I turned out Ok, no permanent damages!

I agree with you. He has proved that he is a no-good punk.

In my view compelled allegiance is not what happened here. Standing out of simple respect was the point. Maybe I missed something.

Yes, the parents should have taught this. Many parents now want to be “friends” with their kids and expect schools to do more and more parenting, without calling it that.

This happened in middle school so kid is in 6,7, or 8 grade. Probably copying his parents or following their orders. Everyone who has a problem with the Pledge of Allegiance or the National Anthem should GTFO now!

When I was 14, my family moved from New York City to the mountains. My first day at the new school, the Pledge came over the PA and everyone stood and recited it. I sat, watching and thinking "What the hell is going on here?" The homeroom teacher ran at me screaming "Get up! Get up!" Naturally, being me, I laughed at such a display from an adult. She sent me to the principal's office.
The principal attempted to impress upon me that this was a very serious matter and told me "Boy, you will stand and recite the pledge or I will suspend you". Naturally, my punk ass 14 yr old answer was "You go right ahead. I'll be back the next day, with my ACLU lawyer".
We compromised on me standing and became good friends.
I had no opinions on the pledge. I had no idea before that day that people said it in school. I just wasn't going to be bullied.

Edit: I stood, after that.

Yeah, I had no clue. I was 14 and had grown up in NYC. I was a know it all little punk.
I learned better, much later.

Edit: In my defense, I was raised by NY Democrats. I could hardly be expected to have a clue, then.

But from a legal standpoint, it seems the student's choice to not stand would fall under the SCOTUS decision of West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette 319 U.S. 624 (1943).

Correct?

But that may be a moot point anyway if the school policy is indeed as quoted:

quote:
The school district allows students to stand or sit during the pledge, district spokesperson Randy Barber told the Denver Post.

By the way, the teacher should know better than to go hands-on with a student in 2018.

I have long advocated abolishing public schools and the government funding of primary education. This is just one more reason why. If we as parents had to pay directly for that service we would be much better consumers and the children of parents that care would do much better . Loading children up with 12 to 13 years of crazy socialism is a lousy idea.

They can be required to remain quiet and unobtrusive with regards to others.

...and as soon as they are legally old enough to vote, they should be asked to leave the USA, along with their citizenship papers on the desk behind them.

Fine with me. About 75 percent of my tax bill goes to the school system. Enrollment dropped yet costs still keep going up. We have a 1 to 9 teacher / student ratio. they could get rid of some staff and make it 1 to 13 or so. Worked for us.

Today taxpayers pay for all the addons parents dmenad but don't pay for...ever.

Shoot, we kept our mouth shut about whatever disciple we caught at school. Any sniveling would have been greeted with "Well, you obviously didn't get enough, so..."

The teacher should not force the student to stand, especially physically. Reciting the pledge is not something we can or should require of anyone. This is a country where we are free to express dissent or simply to be rude punks.

The teacher is an employee of the state. The state should not be in the business of compelling anyone to take part in political speech.

Probably correct, but on the other hand legal BS combined with political correctness is how this country got so screwed up. There is always some reason kids don't have to learn respect these days.

One of the many things I love about this place is our ability to discuss things we feel strongly about and remain (mostly...) civil.

I know I have a habit of running off at the mouth and making very black-and-white statements on matters that are mostly gray.

It's nice to know that someone who's maturity and intellect I respect agrees with me on occasion. Thanks.
