Toyota’s previous retro concept probably would have sold well. Marty McFly’s Toyota truck

That overall set up with the lift, light bar, is pretty darn close to the Toyota Hilux trucks sitting on the dealership lot in Sydney & Melbourne except the Aussie trucks all had snorkels.

Toyota is apparently making 4040 of these 40th Anniversary edition 4Runners with three color options, Black, White and Barcelona Red. I am a huge fan of Barcelona Red I had a TRD Taco in that glorious color but out of the three colors Toyota is offering I would get black. The side profile screams 80’s which was a great time in my life. I’d actually love to get one of these or a TRD Offroad in that crazy metallic lime green but I don’t think my circus family would all fit in a 4Runner.

That's great but how many people really keep their vehicles for that long? And if you off-road it, I'm not sure you can get 250k miles out of it without significant repairs.

Or people rant about resale value. You buying it to resell or to drive?

5AT is a fucking embarrassment in the market today.

I think it's only been about 2 years since they went away from the 4AT in the Corolla. That's 1980s technology there.

My 2007 Tacoma has 212,000 miles on it and drives as tight as the day I bought it new. Outside of a couple of warranty fixes, outside of regular maintenance, I've only had to replace the blower motor and a panel light in the last year. I do have two bad door locks now but that isn't bad for a truck this age and with this mileage. And yes, mine goes off road too.

It doesn't drive as tight as the day you bought it brand new. The decrease has been gradual and you got used to it gradually decreasing over the years.

Nothing can be as tight as it was brand new.

I recently drove a new Tundra, granted not a Taco, but they drove and felt the same.

Several people here don't like the 4Runner, or don't like the graphics, or both I guess. Rest assured, that one and the other 4039 will sell.

Its a beloved truck with a deep history that continues to sell in huge numbers at high prices. Capable, durable, and alone in its class as a mid-sized body on frame truck. Retro vinyl stickers included.

I have a new SR5 "on order", and continue to wait with no word on delivery. Were that on my dealer's floor, I believe I'd take it today at the $2-3K premium over my unknown color and unknown accessory package, unknown cost and delivery version.

As I say, I'm the last "respectable" driver of my cars. I drove a '92 3.0L V6 5 speed manual into the ground (most capable snow vehicle I've owned), and my '04 SR5 V8 is getting to the end as well. Not from miles, a mere 170K, but shear years in the great salty north. The underside is a rotted out mess, and getting to the point where even simple work yields a shotshow of remedial effort. When a new one arrives, this gets relegated to the 16 yo's truck, with a brother less than 2 years behind.

To some points above, I did test drive the '22 4.0L V6, and while not nearly my current 4.7L V8, it was smoother than the clunky hunting and lugging that my Dad's 2017 Tacoma power train does. My 18 year old truck is also quiet, not squeaky or rattly, and remarkably tight; a real testament to original quality of manufacture. Admittedly, I got a huge kick out of seeing some identical stems and clusters on this truck, as my current one. Suppose it will feel familiar!

The new one with the twin turbo V6 hybrid? That looks and sounds like an awesome truck. I think it can tow nearly 10,000 pounds.

The new Sequoia is interesting. It has more than enough room for my circus and “should” do a better job pulling a 21ft boat an hour and half round trip to the boat ramp than our Highlander AWD Limited. Hmmmm

Yes. It was VERY nice. I thought the tow rating was a little higher but I could be wrong. I've been thinking about the new Tundra or a Ford F250 with their new 7.3 gas engine. The Ford is nice too but I doubt it would be as reliable as the Tundra.

The AMF era Harleys had a similar cheap look.

Looks good, except I'd eighty-six those extra side steps, they look like real shin busters!

I like it!

2017 SR5 Tacoma 4x4 driver here, just crossed the 92,000-mile mark. I love that Taco! I saw the decal below on the back window of a 4Runner in traffic and tracked the sticker down online…

Yep. Same w/ my FJ Cruiser. Made in Japan. Solid. And held its value very well. Unfortunately mine got totaled out last year. My goal was to drive it till the wheels fell off. Naturally, not because of a traffic accident.

The dated interior and options as well as the antiquated drivetrain are the exact reasons why they sell every one they build. I have a 13 with 101k and wife wants the new one. We can’t find one with the options she wants anywhere within hundreds of miles.

The new Sequoia looks awesome. However I don’t like that the Hybrid is the only motor option and for the love of Pete they need to produced a long wheel base model.
That is the only reason we have the Suburban and not a current generation Sequoia. Not enough cargo space.

We've got a 2022 4Runner and so far it's been fine. I would have considered one of the 4040 in the red if it was made when we bought. One reason we got the 4Runner was good reports from friends that have had them for years.
