And also when sounding like "a" as in neighbor and weigh.
But you'll always be wrong, no matter what you say.

Like with many things in the English language, where, for example, vulnerable and invulnerable are opposites but flammable and inflammable are the same, I before E is not a hard and fast rule.

I use "I before e, except after the sound of soft c, when pronounced like ee". Then I adopted the pronunciations of "eyether", "neyether", and "lehzhure" (which removed 3 exceptions, "either", "neither", and "leisure" from the list. There are still a few exceptions that have to be memorized, but my modified rule eliminates most of them.

Aparently it's no longer taught in schools, because a rule with so many exceptions is hardly a rule.

My version has few exceptions. And just because it's not being taught doesn't mean it's not useful. There is a lot that is not being taught any more that probably should be.
