If out of towners are interested in catching the Giants game next weekend, is this a bad time to go? Or are these areas same as usual despite the riots?

I'm thinking it's time to explicitly avoid Union Square and stadium. But not sure; the out of towners really want to see the game.

Here in Utah, a so called "peacekeeper" apparently hired or appointed by the organizers of the protest accidentally shot and killed a bystander while attempting to take down a man running with an AR. The suspect with the AR, 24-year-old Arturo Gamboa, has now been charged with felony murder. He never fired a shot. The "peacekeeper" fired three rounds with one striking the bystander and killing him. The suspect, Gamboa, was injured I believe but not fatally.

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Authorities have identified the peaceful protester who was unintentionally shot and killed by an individual believed to be a designated peacekeeper during a “No Kings Day” protest in Salt Lake City.

The protest, which drew an estimated 10,000 people, was underway when Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd said officers from the department’s Motor Squad heard gunfire around 8 p.m. near 100 South and 200 East. Additional officers quickly responded and found a man on the ground, identified as 39-year-old Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators said the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Arturo Gamboa, was spotted by two men — believed to be designated peacekeepers — separating himself from the crowd during the march. The men reportedly observed Gamboa move behind a wall and pull out a rifle.

Police said Gamboa raised the weapon into a firing position and began charging toward the crowd. At that point, one of the alleged peacekeepers fired three rounds, striking both Gamboa and Folasa Ah Loo, Chief Redd said.

Two SWAT medics provided life-saving aid to Folasa Ah Loo before Salt Lake City firefighters and Gold Cross paramedics arrived to take over care.

Police later located Gamboa hiding in a crowd of people with a minor gunshot wound. During his arrest, officers recovered an AR-15-style rifle, a gas mask, and a backpack. Gamboa was treated at a hospital for his injuries and then booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on murder.

Salt Lake City police are working with the District Attorney’s Office to investigate the incident and determine whether any additional charges will be filed.

I’m not an attorney, but I still remember a description of the “felony murder” rule in a law book I read many years ago. As it was explained, if someone was committing a felony crime (as the suspect Gamboa was, evidently) and someone gets killed during the incident, then the felon is guilty of felony murder. It doesn’t matter who is killed or who does the killing, the felon is guilty of the crime.

I read that explanation several decades ago and the provisions of whatever statue(s) were applicable would obviously affect the charges. Something I found interesting at the time was the book’s author’s opining that the rule was overbroad because it would make someone guilty of the offense even in a situation like this when the death was due to the (apparent) incompetence/carelessness of the actual shooter.
