SALEM, Ore. — Sixteen-year-olds could vote in Oregon, under a plan unveiled in the Legislature.

The Statesman Journal reports that several state lawmakers are introducing a bill that would ask voters to amend the Oregon Constitution to lower the voting age from 18 to 16 years old.

If the bill passes, the question would go to voters in the 2020 general election. The proposal would make Oregon the first in the nation to lower the statewide voting age to 16 years old.

The bill is backed by The Bus Project, a nonprofit organization that encourages volunteer civic activism in Oregon.

Since 2003, thirteen other states, including Washington, have introduced bills to lower the voting age, some just for school-board elections and some for all state elections.

None have passed.

If "children" can stay on their parents health insurance until age 26... we ought to raise the voting age to 26.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Unfortunately, that is true. Idaho is now getting swamped with them, too. Somehow it seems as if some asshole taught them how to cross the mountains.

The Bus Project???

So, they want to raise the age for buying a .22 rifle because you are not responsible until you are 21. But at the same time they want to lower the age to vote because you are responsible enough at 16.

Sure makes sense if your a liberal. See their minds are being influenced by the socialist favoring curriculum. They are easier to channel and direct them in a direction. They have not reached an age of reasoning, and figuring out cause and effect. So the liberals believe it will be more votes for them. ITS ALL ABOUT THE POWER!

Makes perfect sense. Raise the age to buy a gun from 18 to 21 because they're not responsible enough, but lower the voting age to 16. IMO, you shouldn't be allowed to vote period unless you're paying property taxes.

I agree! Children of that age can't even decide what shoes to wear that day--why would we let them vote in serious elections?

Let me see here... at 16 a person is still too young to rent a car, own a handgun, or even serve their country. Why, 16 year old CHILDREN barely qualify to drive unsupervised but we should let them vote? Yeah, that makes sense.

Now I don't disagree that a 16 year old intelligent, informed, person who has studied the issues would probably be a BETTER voter than many of the mouth breathing ninnies I've seen at the polls but the argument there hinges on a person's willingness to learn about the issues.

Isn't this the same age group that was eating Tide Pods a few months ago? Oh, hell yeah! They're capable of making responsible decisions.

In all seriousness I think the legal age for an adult in every category including voting, military service, drinking, smoking, contracts, everything should be 19.

And the Oregon Legislature gets to decide.

I've personally met several members of the Oregon legislature, and I've never met a group of more arrogant, yet ignorant people in my life. It's tough to explain, but it's a weird combination of arrogance and ignorance. They think they have all the answers, and know what's best for us, yet they lack basic knowledge.

They can't seem to keep their own affairs in order: https://www.oregonlive.com/pol...over-harassment.html
