I sometimes get a little worked up feeling like I'm constantly getting calls for donations to the NRA, but recently I've actually gotten a chance to see where some of the money goes.
I work for a hotel and about 2 weeks ago we had a large block of rooms check in listing themselves with the NRA. Of course I was interested to find out what they were here for.
They are in my area working the neighborhoods for candidates who support gun rights. They are hitting the streets trying to get out the vote and especially targeting elections that look to be close. What surprises me the most is that most of them are in their mid twenties and half of them are female. Several are NRA Certified firearms instructors and they all seem committed to what they are doing. They are not just paid temporary campaign workers.
I guess I never thought about the NRA at the grassroots level of elections but it was reassuring to see them in action.
I won't gripe next time I get a call from the NRA.

Good to hear that. Glad to know that our dues money is being spent for something other than LaPierre's excessive salary, expense account, and other compensation.

You are right. Tomorrow is going to be a crucial election for our gun rights in VA.

The NRA is not perfect, like anything, but there’s no reason to not be a member and also a member of GOA. And if you can afford it become a life member or better of both. Unfortunately it takes money and lots of it to win elections and keep our rights.

Just to clarify something....

I volunteer with the Friends of NRA which is fundraising for the NRA Foundation. The NRA Foundation directly supports shooting sports through grants for juniors programs, range development, etc. It is not funded by your dues. It is a charitable 501(c)3 and funded by events and donations. It is non-political. Politics and stumping are forbidden at FoNRA events.

I am not as familiar with the NRA-ILS, so I could be wrong, but I think the funding for this door-to-door political work comes out of the NRA-ILA (Institute for Legislative Action), which is also not funded by your dues. It's funded by [political] donations. If you donate to the ILA, this would be your dollars at work.

I had a recent positive NRA experience as well.

My mother in law lives in NJ. She belongs to a Republican women’s club and the NRA sponsored a free shooting event for all the women in her club.

She asked me to accompany her for support since she’s never shot before.

So we get to this outdoor range in the middle of the pine barrens (bumblefuck south jersey). I was impressed! Tons of NRA INSTRUCTORS, all sorts of weapons to shoot, various hand guns, AR15s, shotguns, and lever guns on 5 different ranges. Bow and arrow too!

All ammo was free for them, and the instructors gave them mini lessons on safety and overall comfort with firearms. Food was provided as well. Over 100 women attended.

The best part was right before walking into the area with all the ranges, there was a recall petition for the NJ governor. Overall, it was a very well run event that I’m very happy I attended. It even gave her the push to get her to get a pistol!

Went to the polls this morning wearing my NRA hat. The people passing out sample ballots were both dems and repub's. The dems either turned their backs on me or backed away. One guy wearing all red gave me a big smile and said, "I can tell by your NRA hat who you are voting for." and handed me a repub sample ballot. I got some nasty looks from the dems outside after I voted which made my day even better. Big Grin

Where I vote is a city run senior center with a good sized parking lot. I hate being approached by anyone on my way in to vote, as far as I'm concerned this should not be allowed.
