Has anyone tried the "Calm" app for anxiety?

Slightly off-topic… And without going into huge detail… I’ve noticed anxiety is a very common topic lately with men.

In fact, it came up in conversation the other evening and someone proclaimed that everyone is suffering from anxiety lately. It’s not incidental and just a few people.

I’d have to say I’m starting to agree that it is at least more prevalent than not.

Information overload.

The mind has not caught up in handling the sheer volume of information thrown at us on a daily basis.

I don't know anyone suffering from Anxiety but then most of the people I associate with are retired so they have less to be anxious about and they're experienced enough to know that tilting at windmills is an exercise in futility.

I use it for a stress reducer and to help me get to sleep. Works great for me.

It can be a useful technique. However it does not address the cause of the anxiety. It is certainly preferable to taking benzos.

With respect…

You DO know plenty of people suffering from anxiety; some just hide it better.

Trust me.

It’s hard to notice the troubles in other people if one is constantly focused on their own successes. Reciprocity to the human condition requires experience in kind.

I strongly doubt it. My friends are old friends, we've been together a long, long time and share most everything.

I know people like to think that everyone else is just like them and thus project their fears, hopes and other things on other people, though.

Threads about NDs always reflect that. You'll get people who say that everyone will have an ND or two in their lifetime but that's not true. Some people have NDs but not everyone.

The same with anxiety. Everyone I hang out with has had a lot of success in their life, they're all well off financially and in good to excellent health.

Nope, I don't know anyone with anxiety. I'm sure I'm surrounded by them, but I don't know them on anything more than a superficial "how's it going" basis.

Must not know anybody under 60 huh? Lol

How unfortunate to be so isolated and sheltered.

In my world, I meet people that need help every day.

Those that have made it… They don’t need my help.

People hang out with people that are like them, that's human nature. I'm not sheltered, though, I've done a couple of years in a high school where you had to fight on a regular basis to avoid being bullied, been sent overseas by uncle Sam fight his battles for him, put myself through college as my parents couldn't afford it.

No, I'm not sheltered. I just pick my friends and acquaintances, the same as everyone else.

Anyway…

Getting back to the OP…yes, I’ve tried Calm but found that I didn’t get value from it.

I have an Apple HomePod on my nightstand and each night before I got to bed I say, “Please the sound of rain”.

It gives me the perfect white noice I need to fall asleep.

FWIW...

As for being retired, my anxiety gets much worse when I have nothing to do. As several of my old managers have told me, "You thrive on the chaos." As for being successful, I make a very good living, and am one of the more successful account managers at my company. I have 15 people that work for me. While my personal life has been in the past a disaster, things are very smooth now. I did not go overseas, but I did pay for my own school while working full time in a shop. I don't "tilt at windmills", and have never had an ND...

So, I am not some loser sitting at home feeling sorry for himself. I also hide it very well, I doubt many who know me would guess its an issue. It usually comes on at night, so I am alone anyway.

But anyway, thanks for coming and in and shitting all over my thread asking if something would help, I am very happy to know you and your friends are so well adjusted. Those of us weak minded losers who would like some relief from the issue would like to go back to discussing possible helpful avenues.

There are several types of anxiety. Some people have Panic Disorder, others have Generalized Anxiety Disorder or Situational Anxiety. Apps can be helpful, but getting to the root causes is the most important. Very successful people often have anxiety, it is what drives them.

To keep on topic. Here's the story Matthew Mcconnaughey reads on the Calm app, if you don't want to spend the $80 for it: https://soundcloud.com/mrdavep...-matthew-mcconaughey

The best thing in the world for me is to keep busy.

I make knives (get to purchase cool toys … err tools… Looking at a 1064nm IR laser right now… Deep in the woods) and I play guitar and I work with dogs all on a committed level. I also enjoy driving cars at the track, shooting with my kids and buddies and other stuff.

I do think it’s important to focus on something that really exercise your brain and forces you to learn. I think that helps keep us fit and young and (mentally) healthy.

Exercise seems to also help a great deal, but it’s something I frequently don’t prioritize enough.

********

When that isn’t working, I’ve gone as far as getting help with specific tactics, such as placing your feet on the floor, just feeling the ground and settling on that. Breathing can help.

The ultimate answer for me is usually surrendering on any given issue, and “letting go” any expected outcome I may have. Knowing in my heart of hearts it’s all gonna be fine. Even if this is the day I gotta leave this rock.

I used it several years ago before they charged for it. I thought it was great, but not enough to pay a fee to use it.

Anxiety is a major symptom of PTSD. Many firefighters, police officers and soldiers have the condition. Most hide it rather well so as to not be criticized.
