I had a tuxedo cat coming to my back yard to eat every day for several months. Now he's been away for 2 weeks and I'm wondering what has happened to him. The little female I feed out there still is regular and lets me pet her. (She should--I spent $4000 having her broken leg fixed!). She's a little sweetie, though, and I was glad I had the money to do it.

Thank you for your kindness.

I thank you too, flashguy. Good on you.
This is Mollie (my regular outdoor kitty). She was temporarily in the house while recuperating from the leg fix.

I'm not a cat person, but I can't argue that cats are special animals. When I was still working a remote duty station, our office was a rickety old 10x20' mobile that was about 30 years old. There was a crawl space beneath with a litter of feral kittens that controlled the rodents and scorpions. The hvac duct was apparently open as one particular kitten would stare through the grate.

When I'd pull in for fuel, that kitten would come out to greet me, jump on the car and want attention. I'd take it inside where it was a little warmer. "AJ" would lay beside me while I worked on paperwork. It was still small enough to work its butt into our supervisors coffee cup, which I never discouraged. When the supervisor complained about the bitter taste of his coffee, I'd just Big Grin.

I worked with a guy whose mother owned a farm. Being a good son, he'd go visit her regularly. And one barn cat would come to greet him. It didn't take long for it to be his favorite. But after a while he didn't see it any more. So he went for a walk and found all kinds of little white tennis balls. Kitty skulls. Pissed him off big time. So I gave him some supplies.

Old shotgun shells. Lots of them. So he took up coyote killin'. Some days he'd get to his mom's before she got up, so he'd just sit on the porch with a 12ga. He'd wake her up with the first shot. While folks consider them to be smart, they'd forget one of their buddies just got blasted and come for a kitty cat meal. But after a few shots, they'd move along. But the fool things would forget by the next weekend.

He still hasn't forgiven them for eating his favorite kitty. Forgetting the old theory of sportsman like behavior, he'd never waste a 2nd shell on them. Any good wound will eventually do them in.

Feral cats seem to domesticate really well. Seems like they enjoy regular food, warm places to sleep, and good treatment. We had 5 of them a while back. I want another, but my wife refuses.

My Mollie seems to spend most of her time off the ground now. She comes to the yard via the trees and along my fences, and stays off the ground in the yard. The other cat I'd had coming recently (Tux) hasn't been seen in 2 weeks. I'm thinking some ground predator may have gotten him.
