No double standards |
I know exactly what you mean, only mine was in South Bay, the officer lied (changed his story a couple of times to fit the evidence), the judge suspended the fine, but I still was "guilty". I got pulled over because I was going 60 on the freeway, up a hill, when the car in front of me saw the officer coming up on our left and he let off the gas. There were no brake lights and of course the gap between us closed. I got yelled at for tailgating but didn't get a ticket. I explained what happened and that I wasn't in a hurry because I was honestly only doing 60. Situation awareness is defined as a continuous extraction of environmental information, integration of this information with previous knowledge to form a coherent mental picture in directing further perception and anticipating future events. Simply put, situational awareness mean knowing what is going on around you.

I've got a couple old friends who are cops. I've been on a few ride-alongs. One friend is an Arizona DPS officer. As we watched traffic on I-40 he explained the things he looked for in making a decision to pull a vehicle over. Did he profile? Absolutely, but...in EVERY case when we lit someone up so he could go "have a talk," his PC Statement was already firmly established. Not once, ever, did he pull someone over because they fit a profile, hoping to "develop" PC during the course of the stop. I would hope that every LEO on the forum would agree _______________________________________________________ despite them

My Army barracks-mate (2-man rooms) in Germany was college edumacated and very book smart but freaking clueless about life in general. We were driving on post one day in his Ford Escort when the MP's pull us over (he's driving) MP: Do you know what the speed limit on post is, Specialist! Him: Yes Sergeant, 30! MP: 30 KILOMETERS per hour! Him: Oh! I thought it was 30 miles per hour! MP: Are you for real? He actually thought that, wasn't trying to play dumb or anything. He was just that dumb.

My common sense is tingling |
For being a teenager. My friend was driving and we were headed home from the movies. Late, but before curfew, fairly quiet suburban streets. He wasn't speeding or doing anything stupid and suddenly there are flashing lights behind us. We pulled over and they checked his liscence and registration and my ID. The officer brought our ID's back and said that we could go and to be careful. My friend respectfully asked why we were pulled over and the officer said, "your license plate light is out." My friend asked if he could get out and take a look, his car was pretty new and well maintained. The officer gave him a stern, "No.", then went back to his car and left. As soon as they were gone we both gout out and checked his car: both license plate lights were shining brightly. “You can have peace. Or you can have freedom. I got pulled over for nothing. The cop pulled me over stopped at a traffic light. My inspection was just over 30 days overdue but he wouldn't have known that from sitting behind me waiting at a red light, 8PM at night. I bumped my right tire up on a curb (no sidewalk, just the side of the road) to get around another car to do a legal right turn on red. Got a ticket for, if I remember correctly, leaving the roadway or some crap like that. He threatened to give me a reckless driving ticket.

Fighting the good fight |
You misunderstand me. I was addressing jhe888's statement about not having PC to search the trunk where the dead hookers were stashed. So what I'm talking about is developing PC to search the car, based on observations of the driver and the car during the legitimate traffic stop. The PC for the traffic stop itself is already established before the car is pulled over, based on whatever minor traffic violation the officer observed, like speeding, broken tail light, loud muffler, etc. But the officer may gather additional details during the stop that could lead to establishing additional PC for an arrest on other charges unrelated to the traffic infraction, or PC for a search of the car. You're correct that pulling someone over for no reason, just hoping to eventually find some reason to justify the stop, is not legal. But that's not what I was discussing. Two different PCs: PC for the stop (which they have already). Then separate PC for the car search (which they may or may not develop during the course of the traffic stop). It's not like the officer has to be able to see the pool of blood on the floorboards and gun sticking out from under the seat before he even pulls the car over, in order to have PC to search the car and then discover the body in the trunk. The officer can develop that PC needed to search the car once he's at the driver's door, talking to the driver about going 50 in a 45, and the officer notices that the driver is very nervous and there's a large amount of blood and a partially concealed gun inside the car. See my post on Page 1. "Fishing" doesn't mean randomly pulling people over for no reason. It means pulling people over for small but legitimate violations, in order to check if there are bigger issues going on, such as warrants, DWI, or illegal weapons/drugs.

Unfortunately my little incident wasn't nearly as funny or intelligent! LoL..... That is a funny commercial though. I haven't seen that one before. It's pretty good! LoL.... Now, that did remind me of when I owned a '85 GLH Turbo. I was showing off alittle, leaving where we were all hanging out at. I pulled out of the parking lot and there is a red light right there. It's red. I'm sitting there and I see that it is about to change soooooooooo, I revved the engine up and dump the clutch on the green light, smoking the tires, 1st, 2nd, 3rd.....then the blue lights come on! County cop was sitting in the parking lot next over beside the building. He comes flying out of the parking lot up behind me! I immediately stop! ~awe shit!~ the county cop comes up and I shit you not in a deep southern draw says. "Boy! What day hell is that lit'l fuck'r ya drivin'?"...."ya got som place impotent ta get ta?". I'm thinking I'm fucked! But the cop says "I'm not gonna take write ya a tekit, just promise mes ya ain't gonna take drive dat way the rest of de way home!" I said no sir! I'll drive like I got some sense! He say "good, cus I don't wanna be unrapping yer deeed corpse from a tree or sompthin'!". I thanked him and was about to pull away when he say "you ain't never told mes what de hell that was." So I told him. He said "damn!" and walked back to his patrol car. Everyone at the hangout was watching and laughing. ARman

I was arrested, while in High School, for selling magazines door-to-door without a license. I was in Tracy, CA, about 50 miles from home with three of my friends. The cop told us to follow him to the police station. After holding us for an hour he said, "I'll give you a choice. You can leave and never come back or I'll call your parents and they can come and get you. It's going to take them at least an hour and I imagine they'll be pretty mad when they show up". We looked at each other and left town. I don't think I've ever been back to Tracy. ____ I'm filled with gratitude for the blessings I've received.

I've been pulled over twice for what I consider rather petty offenses, ( all the other times were legit ). Both times, it was by MPs - once in Germany and the other time in NY state. The first offense was going the wrong way on a one way street, ( actually a traffic circle, ) and the second time it was running a stop sign. Both times.. I was on... a mountain bike. Yup. Full meal deal: lights and siren. Not ticketed either time, but I felt both traffic stops were rather dumb. "Also I heard the voice of the Lord saying who shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, here am I, send me."

We where driving to a gun club in rural Indiana when we passed a county sheriff in the right lane. We passed the sheriff doing 63 mph in a 65. HE WAS DOING AROUND 55 MPH. well lights go on and we pull over. The sheriff who is driving a 4 door dodge truck, wearing mirrored glasses and a cowboy hat ask: "Son, do you think it was a good idea to pass a county sheriff on a Sunday while he is on his way to church?" Well of course it isn't officer. Next question: "You boys have any guns in the car?" sir yes we do. Now there is 4 of us so 6-8 shotguns and 3 CCL holders. Last statement: " you boys better not do anything stupid and let me see your I.D's." when he came back to the car he gave us 5 minute speech about not passing a sheriff on Sunday on his way to church. Yes Sir, Thank you sir. at the end of it he just burned our time and let us go. But if your ever running down a rural 4 lane highway on a Sunday, don't pass a sheriff in the right ha d lane. wether your doing 63 in a 65. DONT DO IT! Nothing here to see!

Oh, the stories they could tell, though! I've ridden passenger with some incredibly stupid drivers, then been amazed at how they interact with LEOs! I'm not gonna lie. It makes my blood boil when I see people on bikes disregard the law as if stop signs, etc don't apply to them. They want us to share the road with them but don't want to follow the same rules as the rest of us on the road ------------------------------------ 135 ├┼┼╕ 246R
